Not sure about a clean install (as i've not done it myself) but what about doing a fresh format of Windows 8.1 / 7, then upgrading?

I did this as well as Microsoft apparently didn't have any activation codes for Windows 10 on hand at their Windows activation department. You would think they would be prepared for a platform release, right? Nevertheless, it worked fine.

Do a fresh format of your drive if you want to do a clean install. That stupid "keep nothing" option when you just upgrade actually keeps EVERYTHING!

if you update then insert a windows 10 installation media to do a clean install it should not ask you for a key because it should recognize that your computer is registered

It asks for one but you can just press skip.  You can only do this f you have upgrade that PC and it activated with their servers the first time
