I am thinking of getting a mechanical keyboard but I'm not sure exactly what the switch type means. Could someone explain to me the differences between them

Order a switch demo board. The differences between the switches are the weights they take to register a signal. With a demo board, you can see what switch you like the most.

Just don't get reds just because you're a gamer. Believe it or not they're not the hands down best switch for gaming. You may like another better.

 

I would suggest getting a demo board or something.

I can only echo what others are saying about demo boards.

My first mechanical keyboard was a Razer Blackwidow, which felt "nice", but it actually tired out my fingers to use it for the first few days... I don't know what switches were in it (Was about 2 or 3 years ago, though), but I just couldn't keep using it.

 

Honestly, either get a demo board, or see if there's somewhere near where you live that you can try out different keyboards and switch types.
