So I have an original Xbox, but I don't really have a good spot to put it. Is it safe to use it in a vertical position, or do tou have to use it in the normal horizontal position?

As long as it doesn't tip over and break..obviously..it's fine. Had a friend do that for 6 years, never broke their Xbox.

Make sure it has the groove in the disc tray to catch discs when it's vertical.

IIRC, older consoles didn't have that and bad things came of it.

Yeh I remember I just came how with MW3 during the winter the day it came out and I had my Xbox on the wooden floor and something tipped it over and my MW3 disk was RIP, there were like 3 huge circles lining the disk. Keep in mind I was in like 6th or 7th grade so I was devastated

It doesn't have the tabs to keep them in. Literally everything has the different sizes for different sized disks.

Other than that, I don't see a problem, what kind of DVD drive does your Xbox have?, Samsung?, Thomsom?, Philips?, the Samsung one has the tabs to keep the discs in place if you kept the xbox in a vertical position, the Thomsom doesn't have them, and I don't know about the Philips one.

It would be nice, but mine has the Thomsom I think. Either way, no tabs. :/

Well; without the tabs you're not going to be able to keep it vertical, if you could change the drive for a Samsung one would be nice though.
