Windows.old is simply your previous Windows install. Just make sure you've retrieved all your files you don't want to be thrown out from your Win7 or Win8.1 install.

No not while your using Windows. Have to do a clean install. In pc settings reset PC.

It's perfectly fine to do so.

Edit:

Found Microsoft's process to deleting Windows.old.

  1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_818. In the search box, type Disk Cleanup, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Cleanup.

If you're prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

  2. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files.

If you're again prompted to choose a drive, click the drive you just installed Windows on, and then click OK.

  3. Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete, and then click OK.

  4. In the message that appears, click Delete Files.

That's for Win7, but should work just as well for Win10.

Like me, sometimes it has some .dll, and files that windows thinks that are running, so you can't delete it. IK I can't without doing some stuff, but most likely you can.

Just do a clean install.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Just do a clean install.

Upgrading pretty much is, it just keeps your previous version of Windows, you still need to install all your drivers, programs and the such.

I don't see any files that i would want in that file..

If you're sure there isn't anything, than go ahead with the procedure I quoted in my first post.

Thanks man!

A upgrade install IS NOT a clean install.  It will still use some old Windows files, as well as it doesn't touch anything else.  So ALL of the problems that you had before, WILL still be there.  Not to include other potential compatibility issues, WITH more problems of upgrading vs being able to cleanly install.

Hmmmm, I was fairly certain that it just put your previous install into an easily accessible folder. Didn't know the current install still used files from the previous one.

Well, thanks for the clarity.

It only just removes the Windows.old folder, doesn't do anything with the partition.

Well, not just reusing files and settings it doesn't touch your programs...  And 99% of problems you have with Windows is because of other programs interfering.  And little do people know, most programs will install differently based on what version of Windows you're running.  For example, when PhysX first came out for Nvidia you could install a game in a computer with a AMD video card and get PhysX working on a AMD video card.  But, now most games wont even install the PhysX component of the game in a computer with a AMD video card.  So it, now, would require you to have a Nvidia video card installed in the machine when the game is installed.  I know this is a hardware change versus a software change, but the same basic principle applies (that and with this being a gaming community I feel like this comparison is easier for people to understand).
