Need NAS HD opinion, ASAP

d3sl91

Hey All,

I am currently running a 4-drive NAS (Its a full mATX tower, so, not really a NAS Enclosure). I have 2x 2TB Samsung 5200RPM drives in RAID 1 for network backups for our computers, and then 2x 1TB WD Black drives for network storage/media server.

As you can imagine, those Black drives - while fast and built amazingly well, are also loud, hot, and just past their warranty period. Not to mention almost full.

I want to pick up 2x 2 or 3TB drives to replace the WD Blacks. They will be running 24x7 etc etc. I am trying to keep this at the ~$150 mark total.

Seagate 3TB Desktop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148844 Is $150 for 2 after promo code that expires today

Seagate 2TB NAS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178391 Comes in at $160 for 2, with a promo code that expires today

WD Red 2TB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236343 Is $165 for 2 after promo

Anyone have any thoughts on Desktop VS NAS drives? 2v3 year warranty is "meh" to me. If I wanted more warranty I'd get a Pro or Enterprise drive - it's just not in the budget.

Any better deals floating around out there?

I went HGST drives. They're formally Hitachi, but now they're owned by WD, but have less failure rates than WD or Seagate.

I've got 5 of them in my server with no issues yet. I've always run Hitachi drives and never had an issue.

Hey there d3sI91,

I'd try to use NAS/RAID class drives for such environments for better safety and more stable performance. Such drives havea dditional features such as TLER that makes it harder for them to corrupt data or drop out of the array.
WD Red is a great drive that works really well in a RAID array, works cool and quiet and should meet your needs. :) Here's more info on the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=pBw0MH

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
