Is x99/5960x Over Kill for 4k WS/Gaming Rig?

Hi I'm trying to figure out if I'm building too hard. I want to run a 4K TV is my monitor. And I'm trying to decide if X 99 with a 5960 X is overkill to do 4K workstation work and gaming. I am also building this is a memorial to my brother, who used to work for Nvidia.

ASUS X99-E WS or something else?

3x GTX 980 Ti

5960x or something else?

32gb ddr4

500gb M.2 Samsung drive, will it fit on other board?

6x 8tb mass storage drives.

depends on what your workstation work is. could you get away with less? yes. will this rig be bad ass and wreck everything you throw at it? yes

5960X is unnecessary. A 6 or 4 core Cpu is enough for 4K

I would get only 2 GTX 980 tis but keep the 5960X. 2 GTX 980 tis is more than enough for doing CUDA stuff and playing games at 4k

Depends if your workstation is like for work and needs to be the fastest as possible for productivity.

But if the company is paying for it then GO FOR IT HAHAHAHA  :P if not, it will really depend on your workload and the purpose.

I encode videos for YouTube, edit photos, reference the web all at the same time, & even play games while rendering in the background.

I was afraid all that would be to much for a 4790k and z97 driving 4k

That is way too much work for a 4790k, I would keep the 5960x in that case.

You don't need a 1500W PSU, I'd get the AX1200i

Do you really need 32GB of RAM? If yes, then perfect, if not drop it back to 16GB. DDR4 is already pricey enough, no need to buy more if you don't need it

Also, if those 8TB drives, are the seagate archive drives. Then those hard drives are meant for archiving data. As in write once, never touch it again.

They don't perform well in RAID, the speed on them is terrible, and they're not even rated for regular usage. Depending on what you're after, I would get some WD Blacks, or some HGST NAS drives. HGST NAS over the WD Red because the NAS drives are 7200 rpm, and have a vibration sensor, and will perform excellent in RAID.

the 1500w is originally because of the 3way sli but been downgraded.

so Kingston HyperX FURY Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 2133MHz DDR4 Non-ECC CL14 DIMM Desktop Memory (HX421C14FBK2/16) would be a beter investment then I see.

as for the drives I didn't relize that it was a write once drive.  ty for letting me know about that. sounds like the HGST NAS 6tb drives would work best then.

would the onboard controller be good enough for a raid 10 array or should I invest in a sas raid card?

According to Asus website on the X99-E WS, the maximum M.2 drive that can be installed is type 2280. Samsung didn't say what type is their M.2 drive. To be on the safe side, just grab a standard 2.5" SSD, or for speed, then take a look at Intel 750 NVMe drives. For the NVMe drives, there are 2 types, the PCIe card version where you will plug into one of the x16 slots or 2.5" model, you will also need to get a NVMe Express kit (forgot the actual name) from Asus, where it converts that M.2 into a U.2 connector.

They're not write once, but they're meant for "archival" so if you read/write to them a lot, they'll degrade faster and die sooner because they are not designed for that sort of workload. That isn't to say they won't work, but you should buy a drive that is meant for the workload you'll be using.

If you have it in the budget, then I would definitely get a good RAID card. Mobo raids are the cheap and dirty method, they do the bare minimum to get the job done. A lot of RAID controllers do much more with the drives in the array, like preventive error checking and the like.

Each method will work, each has pros and cons.

As far as the RAM goes, only you know what you will need. The best way to judge this is off your current usage. If you constantly finding yourself filling up 16GB of RAM, then yeah 32GB makes perfect sense. If you barely even fill up 8GB of RAM, then jumping up to 32GB isn't going to do much for you.

im not sure how much ram I actually need. using a laptop with 4gb but ovr loaded it I have to restorre it every few months.

the Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB M.2 3.5-Inch SSD (MZ-N5E500BW) is a Form Factor: M.2 (80mm). I know its not the fastes but way faster then a hdd, lol.

is a HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL 8-Port SAS 6Gb/s PCIe 2.0 x8 RAID HBA beter choice for my raid?

I just don't see the added value in it
