Car subwoofer setup?

Statik

Hey guys,

So I made a post a while back about wanting to upgrade my cars sound system, and I just found all this on amazon. What is everyones impression of it? Any good? Would it work?

If it helps my car is a 2014 Lancer

http://www.amazon.ca/PIONEER-TSSWX2502-Shallow-Mount-Pre-Loaded-Enclosure/dp/B00JQTU3QC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1438226629&sr=8-3&keywords=car+sub+box

http://www.amazon.ca/BOSS-Audio-Gauge-Amplifier-Installation/dp/B000FKP7TY/ref=pd_bxgy_422_img_y

My limit for this is around $300 CAD, because I still want $200-300 for a nice deck.

Not answering the question, but...

Why did you buy a normal Lancer? You should have gotten an Evo.

If you are just powering the Sub you are better off with a Class D Mono Amp.  Sub isn't bad if saving space is your primary concern. These are made for behind the seat of a Truck mainly and they don't hit as hard as a normal sub and the smaller box does not move as much air.

I'm 18.

Insurance on my current Lancer is $430/mo and that's a good deal. Most places wanted ~$500. A turbo/exhaust/intake, etc into the equation is something I don't even want to think about. I can also drop a turbo, or add an exhaust into this down the road when I want (I'd love to now, but voiding warranty scares me).

Also, people are wanting $20-30K+ for a mid 2000's evo. This 2014 Lancer was $15,500. So I'm not paying out the ass each month.

Pluuuus I would've just gotten an STi if I could've afforded it.

I might add speakers down the line, just not that the moment. What's the difference? I'm new when it comes to amp, etc.

Class D is designed to power a Sub, as a result it hits harder and provides better power to the sub. That amp is not going to be enough for a sub and other speakers.

Oh okay. Well the audio seems great so far, so I don't imagine I'll be getting speakers any time soon. Would you mind linking me a decent setup for around $300?

If I was looking in that range this is what I would be looking at personally. It's a bit over but still close.

(Note they have a Canadian Site but it was loading SLOWLY for me so I speced it out on their US site and did the conversion)

Sound Ordnance™ M-1350 $116.60 CAD (Get's Stellar Reviews. My personal Recommendation would have been a Kenwood but they were out of the price range, though some refurbs were close but out of stock)

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777M1350/Sound-Ordnance-M-1350.html

Alpine SWA-10S4 $84.21 CAD (Good little Sub, I have heard it in person)

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500SWA10S4/Alpine-SWA-10S4.html

Sound Ordnance™ Bass Bunker $77.73 CAD (You have a choice between Sealed and Ported on this depending on your music tastes. I put the Sealed one's link)

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_777BB1075S/Sound-Ordnance-Bass-Bunker.html

EFX PA8BX Wiring Kit $38.86 CAD

That's amazing. Thank you so much. I'll defiantly look  into that exact setup. I usually listen to mostly rap/hip-hop, with some odd rock/whatever my girlfriend wants to listen to. So would you recommend a sealed or ported box? And where in my trunk should I mount it? I want it to be as much out of the way as possible so I can put my snowboard and other shit in my trunk.

Rap=Ported. As far as where to put it, that's something that you will have to figure out as you install it.

Fair enough. I'm trying to get it all loaded on the CAD site to see how it looks there.

For a deck I've been thinking of something like the Kenwood DDX272. opinions?

Also, I can't find that amp on crutchfield.ca, but it's on amazon.ca for $101 CAD. It seems all decent to me. Just expensive. Over $600 for a sound system is A LOT. I'm now trying to debate if it's worth it.

Nice Head Unit. If my Car had a Double Din I would consider that myself. I have had really good luck with Kenwood over the years.

Yeah a bit Pricey but if you spend a lot of time in your car it's worth it. I've been a musician since I was 12 so I always go all out on my Car Stereos.

That exchange rate up there is what's killing you. Damn that's rough

Yeah, I'm starting to thing it is. Thinking about ordering the amp and sub this paycheck, then the stereo next paycheck. So would you consider that setup solid and reliable?

Just want to confirm? Or if there are any cheaper options with similar quality? As I'm going to be looking at about $350 before my head unit (though I do got like $200 in amazon visa's I'm going to put in my bank and use)

Not really that I could find. if you can find a good deal on a Kenwood Class D Amp I would go that route. Don't be afraid to look locally too.

Will do. Thanks :)

How hard is the install? I would online, but it seems my YouTube is shitting itself and won't buffer, Does the wiring involve drilling or cutting any holes?

All depends on your car. I've never done an install in a Lancer. You will have to do some dash disassembly most likely to install the head unit. From there you will need to run the wiring to the Amp from the Head Unit, you will also need to run the main power wire from the Battery Itself to the amp and hide the wiring. Door floorboards usually work for hiding the wiring.

After looking into it, the wiring doesn't look too bad. Is it cool to run my wire under the skirting under the doors all on one side? Or do you recommend splitting the wires up down each side?

After looking around, what do you think of this setup?

and aside from the kit recommended, what would be the cheapest (but still quality) wiring kit you recommend? I also work in a lumberyard and can get a decent discount on wiring from my local hardware store if that would be the better option.

so do you already have your dash kit? if not that's another 40#

that subwoofer is kinda meh, sound ordinance is also pretty meh

keep in mind you will be losing your wheel button functions unless you buy and program a compatible interface with a stereo that accepts wheel input.

don't skimp on car audio, it doesn't carry good resale value unless it's top shelf. 200$ of crap is 200$ gone. Save up and make sure you buy decent stuff.

just buy your own stuff instead of wiring kits

if you can't build your own box, buy a prefab box with a subwoofer already in it, those will be at least decently designed for the subwoofer in it.

I would suggest going with sealed, which is a piss easy box to build, but if you want ported and can't build it, do as I said.

if you're just running a subwoofer it doesn't matter about where you put the wires.. because only the power wire will be there? nothing to worry about

I don't have a dash kit, but I don't know if I'll even need one? My stereo looks like a double din just slid into place, so I imagine another double din would be the same?

What kind of stuff would you recommend then (sub, amp, and box for ~$300 CAD)?

Don't most decks come with a cable that you just have to wire in for steering wheel control? Or is that a separate kit I'll need to wire in?

I want decent stuff, I just have a hard time justifying stupid money on a car audio setup.

How hard is it to buy my own prefab box? I work in a lumberyard so I can get MDF from there if it's easy to make my own. Or what's a good combo you would recommend?

I've been told, and read that ported is much better for the music I listen too. Is it really that much harder to build a ported box?

Double Din is not going to need a kit but you will need a wiring adapter. If you get the stereo from Crutchfield it comes with it. You will lose steering wheel controls but you can buy an adapter that will restore them.

That said no sound ordinance isn't the greatest and there are better subs out there but I was working with your budget and the Canadian Exchange rate so it is what it is.

Pluuuus I would've just gotten an STi if I could've afforded it.

sorry to go offtopic here but you pay 430 per month for insurance? i could insure a tank for that :D no but seriously is it really that expensive

It's more or less because I'm 18, have a practically new, sports(ish) car. It's a fucking joke. Don't even get me started on the bullshit stereotyping that insurance companies do.
