Any R/C enthusiasts? Need help

I just need a question answering, I'm building a quadcopter and I'm getting a lipo battery, is it worth getting one of these just in case it all goes wrong? From the videos I've seen on youtube they don't usually work that's all. Also is it recommended to store more than one battery in at a time or is that just asking for trouble?

I have a lipo bag from hobbyking and have my hexacopter battery in it, which also is from hobbyking. And another one on the way. :) So far so good, not puffed or anything. It's a Turnigy 4S 5000mAh 20C battery. Also it is best practise to have just one battery per bag, since if there is multiple in there and one decides to combust, they all will. But that isn't very likely at all unless the battery is mistreated.

Oh right thanks :) I'm getting a 3S 2200mAh 30C battery for a 250 quad. Do you have any recommendations for chargers/balancers? I've been looking into this:

Also what transmitter do you use for the hexacopter? Just curious that's all, I'm thinking of getting on of these.

Also a question about storing the batteries, is it best to keep the cells at 3.8V or 3.85V or does it depend on the battery?

I'll tell you the straight up facts. HobbyKing has really chip Lipos that is good, they are also very light weight which is good for air crafts, cheap Lipos also means cheap cells inside which degrade faster and more prone to exploding or puffing. They also come with a proprietary HobbKing connector which nothing else uses.  My advice would be to a nice Lipos charger and use deans or something else. But for beginners they are perfectly fine.

HobbyKing has really chip Lipos that is good, they are also very light weight which is good for air crafts, cheap Lipos also means cheap cells inside which degrade faster and more prone to exploding or puffing. They also come with a proprietary HobbKing connector which nothing else uses.  My advice would be to a nice Lipos charger and use deans or something else. But for beginners they are perfectly fine.  

Well I could always make an adaptor for the xt-60, I'm building the quadcopter based on a tutorial on youtube and I have already ordered parts with xt-60 connectors too so I might as well go that route. I mean they're not too expensive the lipos, all I really care about is them not spontaneously combusting... I'm just slightly worried that I'll make a hard impact and puncture the casing.

Oh right thanks :) I'm getting a 3S 2200mAh 30C battery for a 250 quad. Do you have any recommendations for chargers/balancers? I've been looking into this:

Also a question about storing the batteries, is it best to keep the cells at 3.8V or 3.85V or does it depend on the battery? 

Accucells are usually OK, I have a Team Orion 50W AC/DC charger, basically one of these. And I believe that is pretty much the same as the DC only 50W accucells but with a PSU built in. 

 

My transmitter is an old Hitec Eclipse 7 with a 2.4GHz module in it. If I were to buy a transmitter today I'd get a FrSky Taranis, it has tons of features and relatively cheap for what it is. What is your budget?

 

You can discharge lipos down to 3.3 volts, but that decreases the longevity of them. I have my Naza flight controller set up so that the red light blinks at about 3.6-3.7 volts per cell under load, so when I land they are at 3.8 volts resting voltage which is the best voltage to store them at and I don't need to do any extra charging or discharging if I don't fly for a while :)

I have just cut the connector off of the battery and soldered on a XT90.

Nice, I feel like we need a section on the forum for RC stuff, I mean like a place with an FAQ or a starters guide to building many different things like quads or helicopters or even boats and rc cars ofc. Or just a section where people can go and ask questions. What car is it? My brother recently got an RC car and it's great, doesn't really drift too well(maybe I'm just bad) and we've already broken a drive shaft so that should be coming in the post soon.

If you can stretch your budget a little to get a radio with a module, I'd recommend doing so. Something like a Turnigy 9XR Pro would be great, you can get modules for nearly everything, for example DSM or frsky. I think you would get a lot more use out of it.

Not trying to offend you, but a CC3D might be a bit overkill for a 250, and a bit expensive. But anyway I'm guessing you have bought it already so thats that.

 

If you only have 90 quid, then that 6 channel radio might be your only real choice here. 

 

That and the charger plus a 1300-2200mAh 3s, you should be around 90. Flitetest seems to like the Turnigy nano techs, and the advertised C rating is higher and in a miniquad you will be pulling a lot of amps from a small battery so maybe I would recommend one of those.

Not trying to offend you, but a CC3D might be a bit overkill for a 250, and a bit expensive. But anyway I'm guessing you have bought it already so thats that.

 

If you only have 90 quid, then that 6 channel radio might be your only real choice here. 

 

That and the charger plus a 1300-2200mAh 3s, you should be around 90. Flitetest seems to like the Turnigy nano techs, and the advertised C rating is higher and in a miniquad you will be pulling a lot of amps from a small battery so maybe I would recommend one of those.

it was $15 so I'm not complaining... I've gone for a 2200mAh 3s 30C it should be more than enough as each motor draws 9 A max that's with aggresively pitched props too, so probably less than that. I just went for the CC3D because of the ease of setup too tbh.

Wait it was 15$? It says £103 in your other post? Typo? If that's the case, it was not too expensive at all lol

Edit: Also the higher C rating helps with voltage sag, so the higher the C rating, the quad will accelerate a bit faster since there is less sag.
