Building an L shaped desk. IKEA-hacks

Guest
So....

I'm trying to build a "custom" desk from IKEA with these specifications:

-L shaped desk. Needs to have the corner on the right side.

-Monitor Riser that can hold 3, 24" monitors and two LEFT and RIGHT Speakers. Also needs to fit a 5.1 AMP (IF possible), Would be nice to also fit a Keyboard and Surface tablet. If it can only fit a 5.1 AMP i would be satisfied. I would also be interested in putting the AMP down below like this:AMP_setup.jpg

-29"+Height and 25"+ Depth for the main desk. The side desks depth can be smaller.

-Stay under $300. OR just a little above $300.

-Place for Storage that can also support the desk. Like a Drawer.

-Don't need a place to store PC, I will put in the corner of the desk if i have room.

My current Desk is a LINNMON Table top, black-brown, Length: 59", Width: 29 1/2 " , Thickness: 1 3/8 " With $4 Black legs and a Computer holder. I can keep this desk and re-use it in the build or sell it to a friend for $60 and use that money towards the new desk.

This is what i am looking for: DESK.jpg

I like this desk besides it being too long.

This is what I am looking for in a monitor riser:

I just want a little extra space on the riser to hold LEFT and RIGHT Speakers. I also want it to be able to fit a 5.1 AMP. Also Black/Brown Wood color.

I want the color to be a Black or Brown. LINNMON table tops would be perfect with the Black/Brown Stain.

If anyone could give me a guide or show me some images or tell me how i could do this or even recommend me some items on IKEA.

i think you might have seen this post from a while back since you have a photo form it but it basically has the idea of it. In general it's pretty easy just get a couple of table tops and sets of legs that you like and setup the desks in the L shaped fashion, you could bolt them together if you want them to be as a single unit. As for the monitor riser you can add on parts or systems that are either prebuilt of create one yourself from materials from ikea:

Yeah i have a parts list and i was wondering if you could give me some feedback on it.

First- For the desk i already have one of these tops: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10251352/ so i could just buy another and put these legs on it http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70217973/ which i already have two on the desk I'm using now as well as a Computer case holder thing.. It is basically a box with a hole for a full sized PC that has a few slits in the back for air ventilation. I was thinking i would display my pc on the corner of the desk where the two desks connect so i wouldnt need this box but i could use it for support or something else... Therefor i would need 6 legs. This would make a pretty big L shaped desk. I'm also thinking there will be a giant crack in between the two desks but I'm not sure how to make that less noticeable and make sure that they stay butted-up against each other.

Second- For the Monitor Riser i was thinking of buying a shelf I'm just wondering how long it needs to be to fit 3X 24" monitors and 2X 8" long speakers? I was thinking i could buy this http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40103751/ and then buy small legs like these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196/ OR these http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10267895/ But I'm worried i won't be able to fit 3X 24" monitors and 2" speakers. I was also thinking if i needed it to be longer  i could glue two of these together http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70159100/ I'm just wondering if they would be able to be successfully glued? If not i could try a bracket....

Third-EXTRA'S

1.SIGNUM http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30200253/ For wire-management and i would just paint it black to match the desk.

2. I was thinking maybe a storage container or something.....

That's basically where I'm at right now. I'm mainly wondering what you think and if i should glue those two pieces together to make the Monitor riser or just buy the 74" one. Also any suggestions you have are welcome.

Personally I'd go with a thicker table top 3/4"-1" minimum since it's an unbraced table with just legs it will sag with a heavy load onto of it only be 1/2" boards at 5 ft long. For one end of the desk you could replace the legs with say a deep drawer unit to hold small items and things and give good support if you plan to place a heavy PC on the desk.

For the riser I think those would work perfectly and its shelf it's basically 6 ft long so it should easily fit all 3 of your monitors, not sure about the speakers but if they aren't too bulky you might be able to squeeze them in

I think i will stick with the desk tops but i do agree more support could be added. Do you have any ideas for a deep drawer? I did see this.. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00261295/ It's gray though and it's a little more expensive then i planned for.

Yeah that would definitely work it is a bit shallower than the table top, the drawers being 22 7/8" and the table 29 1/2" you might needs to leave a lip at the front and back so the drawers aren't flush to the front.

One thing I just noticed though from that a 29" deep desk top is pretty long reach for a desk just to mention, most are around 24" but it does give you more workspace.

Well the legs i have are 27 1/2" so i think these two would work fine. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00261295/#/10192824 AND http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20277785/ I just really want to find something black/brown that would give it support. I could use the computer box that matches the desk and that I'm currently using in replacement of two legs for my desk. I could buy 6 legs and put 2 on each end for each desk and then the computer box/case/holder thing in the middle and use it for something.....

I have the white box on the left corner of the screen. http://postimg.org/image/yiduxj2ph/ I'm doing the same thing he is right now.

I didn't mean the height but depth wise since the depth of the table is greater than the actual drawers so it would overhand the drawers a bit.

I found that specific shelf but it doesn't look like they have it anymore:

Yeah i have one of those except it's black. I was thinking i could do 4 legs for each desk and one of these computer drawer things in the middle corner. Other than that i could build a custom support out of wood. I don't really know but anyways that's basically the idea. For wire management i want to get the SIGNUM and paint it black but i would like to try to hide the SIGNUM some how. Any ideas?

Seems like a good idea for the wire management I think it wouldn't be too noticeable unless you look underneath it or the back is against a wall. You could get something like black coroplast to cover the frame and wires inside.

Well i think the desk is solid so far. I can add onto it later or change it later but i think it will be pretty good for now. I'm going to wait on it and measure everything out and see what my final build ends up to be. But I'll be changing it all around and ordering it eventually and then I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the help. If i have any more questions I'll just Pm you.
