Files gone wierd

I have recently bought a WD elements external hard drive and I put a load of photos on it. The next day I went to were I put the photos and it was full of a load of files with crazy names. (Photo down below). How do I get the photos back?

Please help!

Properties of the hdd > extra (i think) > error check, or whatever it's called.

It's possible that fixes it.

I did what you said and it turned the folder into a file
