Can anyone tell me, can folding@home be used as a stress test? Of course i'm not trying to detract from the basic purpose of it but i just wondered, considering it is a high stress software that gives out different computations doesn't it make it a good stress test for an overclock?

It can do, but not on its own. Good idea to run other things like Unigine Heaven and Valley to make sure.

I consider it a pretty good stress test myself. Running at "Full", it'll use everything you have out of CPU and GPU. Of course, it is a specific type of computation, so other stress testing softwares probably use different computations and instructions and so on.

But it's stressful enough that it can certainly be a filter for "will my hardware get hella hot at 100% usage for X amount of time?"
