860k, FX 6300, i3 4130

Go to solution Solved by don_svetlio,

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HA3444I/?tag=pcp0f-21 like this one? Yes i know that i5 is much better then i3, but so is R9 380 and 750Ti, isn't? Is it worth getting a i5 instead of a i3, but then cheaping out on the GPU?

Getting the i5 + the 270 would be the best of both worlds

Cheaping out on the GPU is a bit of a waste as you will have to dump it when you upgrade and games are more reliant on the GPU. Just grab the i5 and the 270X and you are good to go :)

Which CPU is the best CPU for the price? Considering costs from www.amazon.co.uk (only). Which CPU has the best price-to-performance? Looking to be gaming on this, paired with a MSI R9 380 and 8GB of DDR3 1600Mhz RAM. Considering that i5 is out of my price range.

860k is best for it's price and the i3 has the best performance out of the 3

I like the FX6300 over the i3 except there's virtually no upgrade path. If you will continue to save and have money to invest in the PC, I would suggest going pentium/i3 so you can throw an i5 in later. The FX series is starting to look pretty dated unfortunately, hopefully Zen will make AMD platforms more compelling (I don't see how it wouldn't).

Won't the R9 380 get bottlenecked by 860k?
Why is i3 superior? In a different forums EVERYONE was team FX 6300. This is so confusing.

FX 6300's performance is split along 6 cores whereas the i3's slightly lower performance is split between 2 cores making it 3 - 1.5 times more powerful in most games atm which can only use up to 4 cores. Newer games do sometimes take advantage of the 6 cores (witcher 3) and will have both CPUs running close to each other.

The 860k is a very budget-oriented CPU and shouldn't be paired with the 380.

But what about the upcoming LGA 1151 socket? Does that mean i won't be able to upgrade a i3 to i5 (w/o chaning mobo)? And what bout Dx12 just around the corner? People are saying that it will increase multi-core performance in gaming.

the 860K, yes, a 370/270/960 would be the max I'd push it.

The FX 6300, if OCed and used in a multi-threaded game (WItcher 3) will actually beat out the i3 so it's fine to use it alongside the 380

The i3 is your best bet atm honestly. Unless you can find yourself an older Phenom II X4 for cheap, then go with the i3 or a used i5.

The i3 is better at single threaded apps, way better. This includes games.

The i5 is obviously better. It has 4 actual physical cores whereas the i3 only has 2. If you can afford it, the 4460 or a 2nd hand 2500/3570 are good as well.

EDIT: Also check the price of the R9 270 as they should be cheaper and perform better than the 750 Ti.

I have a fx 6300 and r9 270 and it works just fine. If you buy an aftermarket cooler with it and overclock it is a very good cpu for the low price. It doesnt bottleneck the 270 at all and is (atleast where I live) 100 euro's cheaper then the i5!

The i5 is quite a bit more powerful than the FX 6300 and will offer better long-term performance.

The 270X will serve you well and will get you 60 fps in almost all modern games.

If you go with that build OP, you won't be disappointed :)

I am more  than happy with the CPU as it's never really gotten over 60-70% usage (Witcher being the most taxing game I've run).

In the Witcher 3 I am able to get 60 FPS solid at low and about 30 fps solid for the most part on high. Now, considering that this is quite the demanding game it's expected to tank performance. I haven't been able to test GTA 5 but every other game I have I play on Ultra or High @ solid 60 fps (Shogun 2, Homeworld Remastered, Age of Wonders 3, SC2 and etc).

I'd link you my 3Dmark score but I'm having some issue with the boost clock in that application (it boosts fine in games) so until I sort that out I can't post anything. I'll run Unigine Heaven if you want so you can have an idea of what to expect.

I run gta 5 at high/ultra settings with 60-70 fps (sometimes it drops to 50 when there are alot of people but that is probably because of the cpu)

Really? Only 30 fps on the witcher 3 with ultra settings? I have ~45 fps with the witcher 3 on ultra (hairworks off) and you have a r9 280. Weird
