Difference Between 7.1 and 5.1?

Go to solution Solved by TheKDub,

I just got a new motherboard and it has 7.1 HD audio, my old motherboard had 5.1 HD audio. I want to know if this affects my headset audio at all or if it just allows me to have extra speakers attached to my motherboard.

7.1 has two more channels than 5.1

It won't affect your headphones, but it will allow for usage of 7.1 surround speaker setups.

A 7.1 channel surround sound system has 7 speakers around you, with one subwoofer

5.1 has 5 speakers around you, with one subwoofer

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

Headset - no difference

It just offers the possibility to plug a 7.1 sound system to your PC

so for a 5.1 headset no difference but if i get a 7.1 headset what difference will i see?

Correct me if I am wrong, but 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are through USB and that is just virtual sound... only a fraction are real 5.1 or 7.1 and even then you have like 4-5 pieces of 3,5mm jacks coming out of the headset...

Case and point - 5.1 and 7.1 headsets are useless! I know, I had one... Simple stereo ones are plenty for a gamer
