High temps?

Go to solution Solved by tomas710,

stable at 88 celcius and dipping to 87 at some times

On NCIX tech tips they got a max of 75ºC on a MSI 290X (Almost the same) and the GPU should be fine at 90ºC according to AMD, but it shouldn't be that hot on a good aftermarket cooler, so i would think something is not ok

Hi !

i was gaming with my MSI twin frozr r9 290 the other day and noticed that my card was loud as heck (while gaming) so i checked out the hw moniter and saw a 92 celcius on my card.

it wasn't a very hot day about 23 celcius and my cpu was just doing fine so i was playing reign of kings alpha 16 on my lg 29um67 and it was on full load, i don't know if it was throttling.

now when i watch the temps on idle after playing a game a day long its about 50 celcius so is this normal since i never experienced my gpu fan ramping up to 100 % before.

* insert AMD heat joke here*

anyway, it shouldn't get this hot. maybe check/replace the thermal paste?

The first thing I would do is to clean my PC. You should do that on a regular basis.

Also I would have a look at the thermal paste on your GPU. Cheap thermal paste can dry out after a while and lead to high temperatures.

But before you take your GPU apart get some new thermal paste, cause otherwise you will not be able to get it back together.

That is hot for a Twin Frozr, even if the 290 can handle those temps. I would clean the card outside the PC, remember to hold the fans if you are using canned air or similar. The next step id that doesn't help is changing the thermal paste, the TIM itself is not a big deal, anything decent (AS5 or better) will do, the issue id the thermal pads, if you're lucky you can reuse them but sometimes they get torn, if that happens you should have thermal pads but i'm not sure the thickness that would be apropiate, i think 1mm is the standard but it is an aftermarket cooler so, i would consult some reliable source over what thermal pads to use

Well, i assumed it was older, and yeah, if it's only 6 months old is unlikely that the pads will break but it's always possible, so be very gentle when detaching the cooler. What thermal paste are you using?

That's a great temperature, under 90 is totally fine with that card. Now I advise you to uninstall furmark since it is REALLY bad for your GPU.

i think give or take my card runs a little bit hotter but the ncix crew probable ran it in a open air test bench so that benefits them.
