Hey guys,

I am just about to start actually ordering some parts and wanted to make sure I didn't do anything dumb before I do. The budget for the current build is right around 2k, however I could go up or down if it made sense. I will likely upgrade to a 4k monitor, although I don't have one yet (suggestions welcome). I already have a mouse, keyboard, etc.

I am thinking the hard drive and ram are a little bit much, but am willing to pay a little bit more for a little more snappiness.

I have concerns about the power supply as I haven't heard of it, but 80+ gold so it can't be crap, right?

Let me know if you have any questions that will help. Thanks for your time.

If you're using this for heavy video editing and serious games, this looks great. If it's just games, you spent way too much on this.

Looking at Newegg's reviews, the PSU looks OK...

Edit: you should add a 1 TB hard drive for mass storage

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

16gbs of ram is plenty, it's actually more then enough. You can always add more if needed. The PSU could be better. Maybe something like a EVGA g2 or GS series 750w. You said you had a hard drive but all I see is a SSD. A solid state drive. I'd reccodmend a smaller SSD like 250gb from Samsung and getting a 1tb drive WD Caviar Blue is what I reccodmend for mass storage.

Only real thing he's spending a lot on is the ram. You can never go wrong with over doing a CPU since some games are actually starting utilize more then 4 cores and hopefully soon the extra threads. Plus the 5820k will easily last 5 years and probably more before he feels like he has to upgrade.

Makes sense, a larger hard drive makes sense. 1TBs are had for next to nothing. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have.

I guess I was just thinking that an extra 16gb of ram for $100 didn't seem crazy, but i guess if I never use it, then its worthless.

I would look at the AMP extreme 980ti as it is faster, quieter and cooler than the G1 gaming.

I thought about that, but the cooler seems massive. I guess I have the space with only one slot taken, but wonder if I have room if I decide to go SLI in the future.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll likely lower the ram and get a hard drive.

The use is likely some gaming, no video editing, but I'll spend the majority of my time just doing research and equity trading. its not overly cpu/ram intensive, but savings a second can be incredibly handy.

Any other suggestions?

Unless you're a major video editor I find that build overkill.

I did make one that's a good build, and cheaper, and even if you're a video editor it still has a lot of potential.

An 5820k is pretty overkill, unless you're a major video editor like i said. A 4790k is better if you're just gaming, and it's also good at video editing.

I use the same cpu cooler so I can vouch that it's pretty good.

It's much cheaper and more convenient to get a standard 2.5 inch ssd, and 250gb should be enough. It's a nearly $200 difference with that m.2 drive, and i threw in a 2tb hdd.

I think Evga's *gpus are better than gigabytes and fits the theme better.

The case is better in my opinion, same with the psu. The two fans i chose going at the front of the case.

Don't get a i7 extreme edition CPU if it's only for gaming and research your watering your money, you would be better off with a i5 and that's all you will ever need, and if you are looking into 4K in the future not even the 980ti delivers a constant 60fps with settings maxed out on ever game, so you might want to look at a different GPU choice.

Thanks guys, So it seems like there are a few conclusions. X99 is probably overkill, NVME for a normal person is silly, go SSD and a larger hard drive. Inception and BigDay both have pretty nice builds too.  Thanks for the help guys. I'll definitely tweak some things before purchasing.
