Yes, Folding@home works on Ubuntu.

thanks will it run smoothly? Is it the same as windows (running smoothly wise)?

I can't answer that as I've never used it before on Ubuntu.

should I choose windows or Ubuntu?

If you want as much compatibility as possible, Windows.

This is something I would love to see benchmarks on. Would you say the compatibility is higher due to more frequent updates to the F@H software on Windows, plus more frequent driver updates for video cards?

I'm only curious because in late 2015, I may be putting together a new 24/7 folding machine too, and ideally I'd want it to run Linux for other reasons, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.

Support for video cards is definitely better on the Windows side. Compatibility is better in the sense that more programs are developed for Windows than Linux and that may be useful down the road if you decide you want to run certain programs on the system that only run on a particular platform(i.e. Windows in this case).

Yes.

If you don't want to pay for Windows, you can go for a Linux distro instead. F@H will work on it https://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide/linux-install-guide/

Or, if you don't want to pay for Windows but still wants to use it, just install the Windows 10 Insider. You'll be forever stuck with the Beta releases, but hey, at least it's free and legit. Besides, it also helps the F@H, for when the newer builds go out in the wild.

Unless things have changed folding on Linux with AMD GPUs may have some issues with OpenCL because of iffy drivers, I'd recommend getting the Win10 preview installed for free just to be sure that everything will work.

So, just some notes about this...

Folding in Ubuntu is as stable as folding in Windows, CPU wise. In fact, Ubuntu will edge out a Windows build by a small margin of PDD due to lower overhead. Now, for GPU folding... that is different. Still in beta on Linux clients. If you going to do any GPU, then go Windows. Drivers much more stable on that end...

are GPUs good for folding?

Yes. GPUs now are significantly faster at folding than CPUs.

Run what? CPU's and GPU's? Yes, multiple GPU's? Yes.

thanks. But do you have any good build ideas? My build was too good (it costs too much).

Just get the most GPU you can for your build. GPU's are where the points are at...
