Hey everyone!

To my dismay, I woke up today to see my old server off. The old motherboard no longer recognized it's ram. It makes me sad yet happy at the same time, since now I can get a server with DDR3 instead of DDR2. :P

Here's what I'll be running:

TS3

Terraria/Minecraft

Occasional Source Servers (TF2, CS:GO, etc.)

And I'm sure some other things I'm forgetting.

Keep in mind, these will not be running all at the same time, although TS3 will ALWAYS be running alongside whatever else I'm running. (For example, TS3 and TF2, but not TS3, TF2, and Minecraft.)

What do you recommend? I'd like the server to be in a small form factor if possible. I'd like the budget to be around 400/500 US dollars, if possible.

Thank you for any help you can provide! If I'm missing anything, ask!

I need specifics. :P I understand the 260x, but what i3? How about motherboard?

I'm not so familiar with small form factor builds. Sorry if I sound like a complete noob.

I'd recommend going with either an i3 or an i5, minecraft servers are single-threaded, so having an AMD processor with more cores & worse single-threaded performance will not help you out there, Give me a few mins and I'll see what I can throw together.

off topic but  do you use your IP as a hostname?

if not, how do you change the hostname?

I use my public IP. Just my friends and I play on the servers I host, so I don't really worry about much regarding my IP. I have no clue how to change it, I'm sorry. D:

That's what I was thinking, too. Plus since I want it in a small form factor, AMD processors may heat up my room a bit, due to their high TDP. :P

Actually, if he is planning on doing many things at once (multiple servers), a multi-core AMD processor may actually be viable and beneficial - its just too bad its hard to find smaller boards for AM3. . Especially since you can get many cores for cheaper through them.

BUT. What you DO NOT get, is low power and low heat.

Here ya go, little bit of leftover money for an OS from http://reddit.com/r/microsoftsoftwareswap or wherever.

Could also drop the RAM down to 8GB, but I feel that 16GB is a good amount for a PC that will be hosting multiple servers.

Highly recommend that SSD, I have one in my rig that I use as the main OS drive (also have some programs and games on it), very fast and reliable SSD.

Yeah, that's what's sad. I wish there were more options with AM3. :/

That seems like a great server. I actually have a left over PSU from a past rig. The 45 dollars could go to.. not really sure. I might splurge a bit on the case, because I must have the pretties. ;) Thank you for the list!

What PSU? (Gotta make sure its at least decent quality so you don't blow everything up lol)

Thermaltake SMART. I know, it's a pretty... sub-par PSU. I swapped it out for a nice EVGA G2 PSU for my main PC, and now it just sits collecting dust. I didn't have problems with it for about 5 months.

Ehh... Idk if I'd trust it to be running a "server", but its up to you.

If your current PSU is strong enough, and you have a drive laying around you could get this for a server. (You'll only need 200Watt.)

You can just salvage it all from your current server.

It has endless upgrade-ability potential.
