Is the Corsair VS650 good enough for my next build?

Go to solution Solved by Silyy097,

Im currently using it, and it has no issues.

However I would recommend you getting a better PSU if you are going to be putting a lot of stress on your system (eg, overclocking, running for long hours, folding etc) as it is not even 80+ rated.

I am wondering if a Corsair VS650 is good enough to power my "budget" build:

 CPU: FX-6300

 GPU: R9 380 4G MSI

 MoBo: MSI 970 GAMING motherboard

Storage: WD Blue 2 Tb HDD

 RAM: Crucial Balistix 8 Gb

 Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 14

I would probably get a better PSU. i believe the VS is one below the CX Line and the CX Line is shady enough as it is.

1. I've got a VS 650 in my main rig-keep it near full load to get the best results and to limit GPU coil whine, and yes its plenty.

2. What's your budget?

3. Why did you choose a 4 year old CPU that's only a modified Phenom II? (2008, the ALU or integer core is split in 2 giving the appearance of 6 cores when in all reality its only got 3).

Don't get SSDs, mechanical keyboards or a deathadder when on a budget, especially if it means a GTS 450 instead of a 380.

Hi I have that cpu and it's a good one that's old as hell like by old 5+ years and it would be better to get an i5 unless you get the mobo and fx chip dirt cheap, but if they aren't dirt cheap go for the i5

Not everyone wants to spend $200 for 4 Intel cores when you can get 6 FX cores for about $100 less. At that price point it's competing against i3's, which get obliterated. I use an i7 in my main rig and a 6100 in my older machine. Love them both, both get the job done. Stop being fanboys and do some research.

It is outdated, but he is focused on gaming and the Performance per dollar of the FX 6300 is just better, spending $100 more won't make a massive improvement in basically all games just by switching to an i5. even with what you linked, the 6300 comes within 4 FPS of the i5 2500k in GTA V for $100 less, which is basically within the margin of error.

Coming from someone who just put the FX 6100 in place of an i3, no. Especially not if you plan on playing games like BF4, which like 4+ cores, or doing any CPU intensive recording.

Battlefield 4 and Hardline are the only games that runs well on the FX series because of AMD's deal with EA. I'll show you the diagram that compares the die of the Phenom/Athlon II X4 and the FX 8350. You should rapidly spot the similarities-The FX 8350 as an example actually doesn't have 8 cores, and the same translates for the rest of the FX line (3 cores and 2 cores, for AMD FX core= module).

uhh, no? really any game that likes to have 4+ games will generally like the FX lineup. I highly doubt that AMD and EA collaborated on anything more than the Radeon lineup. I really don't want to argue about this whole AMD vs Intel thing anymore, I have my 6100, the OP has his 6300 and I think we can agree that it isn't cool to give shit to someone about something they spend their money on. Suggestions are fine, but it's too damn late now.

Re-read my post, you have no clue at all what you are talking about when it comes to the FX line, unlike you I've done the research and I have a friend who regrets upgrading from their Phenom II X4 to an FX 8350. (I never upgraded as frequently as him so I never actually bought a CPU-excpet the 386, that's AMD and proudly so sine it flogged the 486 for a while while being dirt cheap- when AMD was the performance leader, 386 DX 40>Celeron 300A>Pentium III EB 667> Pentium 4 Northwood 3.2GHz>Core Duo T2600>i5 4440).
