Leave my pc on or off?

mhdg

So i use my pc roughly around 3 - 4 hours per weekday, and in weekends probably around 6 hours. Should i shut it off every night? Leave it on all the time? Or shut it off on certain days? I believe turning it on and off can damage components and so can leaving it on all the time, which one would cause the least component damage in my case?

Neither option is better or worse so do whatever is most convenient, I usually turn mine off but I have an SSD so boot up times aren't problematic.

I leave mine on 24/7. It's in my bedroom but good thing it's quiet. I don't like turning it off because even though I have an 840 Pro, I don't like waiting for Windows to boot. The only time it's off is if I'm cleaning, installing a component, redoing cables, or taking it to a LAN party.

Whichever you feel like. If you can afford leaving it running all the time, then go ahead and do it.

Well it can't get slower if I'm constantly making it faster...

Full off can be bad over time for parts.  Leave it on, but if you wanna save money and your parts use sleep/hibernate modes.

Really? I turn my PC off every night.

I heard leaving it on doesn't really affect the lifespan of the part, although you have to consider that the parts are constantly receiving wear and tear every second that it's on.

Save energy, turn it off/sleep.

I produce music!

I say shut it down when you're not using it :)

Like the New Horizons spacecraft that will finally be visiting Pluto tomorrow morning, most of its electronics on-board were off in hibernation mode for nearly 8 years getting there.

Sorry, had to. I don't think comparing the the 100 watt powered spacecraft that is using the gravitational pull of nearby plants and asteroids can be fairly compared to turning your PC off at night or not in use LOL.

I hope it's slightly less than 8 years between uses on my rig, or else I've wasted some money...  ;)

You'll be saving energy by turning it off, so this is probably the best idea. Leaving the machine on or off will not affect lifespan in a way that you'll notice. However, conventional wisdom would suggest that leaving the system on will make it last longer due to changes in temperature. This is definitely true of hard drives, as they have to physically start and stop.
