New Build Help

Hi All,

I've been a big fan of Linus for a while, but never really had any need for the forums. Now I'm building my own desktop, and I think I have a great setup, but even with all of Linus's videos I certainly don't know it all.

I'm somewhat strapped for cash, I'd like to go no more than $1200. For a benchmark I'd say I'd like to play GTA V at 60 frames on high settings.Other than that it's you're normal steam games.

I've built this so far, so I guess I'm really asking two things.

a. Is the build really any good anyway?

b. Can I change some parts and build a cheaper PC that performs the same.

I appreciate all input!

The Build

I also will be needing another monitor, so if you have any cheap suggestions, I'd love that.

Thank you.

That seems like a well rounded build to me

Really dont think you need 16 gb of ram, go with 8 gb and save like 60 bucks. Also CX psu's are pretty bad, go with a seasonic.

Do you really need 16GB of RAM? If not, then get an 8GB and spend more on the GPU.

Looks like a good all around build.

That looks good. I would suggest using an ethernet cable rather than WiFi for internet if you can, it is more reliable and faster. If you want to shave a bit of money, get rid of the SSD. They are nice, but if you can afford to wait a little bit longer for things to load/boot, it is not worth it. Also, do you need 16GB of memory? If you are just gaming, bump that down to 8GB of memory, that is enough.

I might pick the r9 390 over the 970 though, but the 970 ain't that bad.

That is a good build.

8 GB of RAM is likely enough, but even if you want 16GB, go with something cheaper like:

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/kingston-memory-hx316c10fbk216

For GPU, the added cost of the EVGA FTW is usually not worth it.  I suggest a cheaper 970 such as this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn970wf3oc4gd

For PSU, I suggest this EVGA Supernova:

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g10650xr

And for storage, I like your choice.  In my opinion an SSD is a MUST HAVE.  Your new build will feel a lot slower without it.

8GB of memory should be more than enough, G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory.

Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply currently has an MIR that makes it less expensive than the 500W model. But Antec HCG-620M would be a better psu choice.

If he's spending this much on a PC, he may as well get an SSD. Sure, it could take away from raw in-game performance by taking funds away from other components, but an SSD is such a nice thing to have. To push the power button and the PC is on in less than 10 seconds is a God send.

-snip-

It looks excellent. I'd be inclined to spend more for a higher quality PSU. Something like an EVGA 550/650GS would serve you well. It is of excellent quality. Remember to read PSU reviews on sites like JonnyGuru and HardOCP for their approval of power supplies. When it comes to the PSU, skimping really isn't worth it.

What are you putting on the SSD? If it's just the OS and a couple of core programs, 120GB is enough space for Windows updates and Chrome, utilities etc. You can save yourself some money by going for a 120GB alternative instead.

As everyone else has said, 8GB is enough for modern gaming. You also don't need super flash RAM - it doesn't make any significant difference over cheaper RAM from a solid vendor (at least not enough to justify its premium).

For PSU, I suggest this EVGA Supernova:

Thank you for that correction.  I always get the various EVGA models mixed up.

PSUs are one of those parts that you really need to check reviews to be certain you are getting a good one.  I love http://www.jonnyguru.com/index.php for PSU reviews

Any other suggestions?

What about this PSU? https://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx600m

EDIT: Again, two 1080p monitors, GTA V for Benchmark. Open to all suggestions, thank you!

Hmmm, can't find the permalink. But I changed, PSU, graphics card, and RAM.

But I'm still looking for ways to save money.

Permalink is in the "current part list" or "part list", not a saved list. Click on http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ZGmtFT. You will see a permalink under the text "Part List" in the upper left area.

I obtained this link by clicking your link in post #13. Clicking on the title "New Build". Then "Edit This Part List". If this is your updated list, it seems to have ignored much of the advice provided.

You can find a r9 390 for cheaper.

From what I've learned about the r9 390, it performs about the same as the GTX 970, maybe a little better. But because it isn't a huge difference, I'm drawn away due to the red color scheme since I'm going with a Black/Blue build.

Changelog (as of 7/14/15)

- GPU changed to Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card

-PSU changed to  EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

-RAM changed to G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

I'm still waffling on GPU's, but still trying to get the best bang for my buck.

Thank you to all who have contributed so far. :)

It is fine. But the system will need a better cpu cooler if it is going to be overclocked. And if it isn't, some $ could be saved.
