I think you will be able to run the card just fine on that PSU, but it may be working pretty hard. Make sure it is a high quality one at least. It may be more comfortable if you can find a way to get a good brand of 650W PSU so there's never a doubt in the back of your mind that things might be tight. Then again, I am the guy running one on an 850W PSU just because.

Well , I was planning to buy a 600W Sirtec after seeing those benchmarks with the power consumption , but I can get a 650 W , what do you think ?

Hello , I am building a PC for my friend , his budget isn't that big , and I was wondering , is a 550 W PSU enough to hold a R9 290? He's going to pair it with an I3 4170.

550w is fine,

I think finding a quality model is more important than whether it says 550W or 600W or 650W on the box. I guess just pay attention to reviews and maybe try and find something on JonnyGuru but I am not sure how much he deals with budget stuff.

Well 311 Watts at full load is a lot , hope it can hold it , if not , I will go for a 600W to be 100% sure .

311 watts isn't that much.. as long as it's a decent unit a 450W would do fine.. if getting something like  a 290, then get a reasonable unit at least, there is more to consider than how much power it can provide, like how clean the power is and protection in the case that it fails and over / undervoltage protection etc.

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

I'm running my R9 290 (TRI-X OC) on a 650 W Corsair PSU.

But my CPU is a tad beefier, so I need the extra power.

From what I've read, the card demands a minimum of 550 W to be able to operate, and needles to say - I prefer staying out of the "minimum" zone.

It does draw quite a lot of power.

Since 550W is the minimum , what about this one Corsair NEW VS Series VS550, 550W ? Corsair seems like a good brand .

No.. thats the recommended power the manufacturer says that will power the whole system.. But they don't know what you have in the PC or the quality of the PSU... it's been 500W~ for as long as I can remember and the power consumption isn't what it used to be..

I read this a couple of months ago off Sapphire's website.

I do quote "minimum power supply requirement".

And yes, obviously for the whole system.

That isn't very good. This SuperFlower is far better if you can get it.

So superflower is a good brand , thanks for the tip .

Super Flower makes great PSUs. So do Seasonic as well so take a look into them and see which is better for your money for the wattage.

Thanks for the link , that's really helpful.

You're welcome (maker of that thread)
