I would go 970. More established, so more support if it isn't up to snuff.

i'm gonna suggest to stick with nvidia, for the sake of sticking with nvidia.

however, i've heard the strix isnt the best GTX970 out there, and the MSI and gigabyte versions are better.

(i personally have a strix, i'm happy with it.)

Witcher 3 currently runs fine @ 60fps for me on a 280. You should be fine with either choice. I personally dislike the 970 for several reasons - 224-bit 3.5 GB of VRAM (512 MB are unusable). The cards are well know to have annoying coil whine. Google and see how many are reporting it. It's performance is overall lower than the 390 and the frame buffer is less than half. 390 TDP is about 215W and the 970 has 170W I believe which is not enough of a difference to me to justify the less powerful GPU. Google JayzTwoCents' video on the subject and see for yourself.

Both cards are OK .. but I would vote nVidia for more stable drivers in general compared to AMD ..

I own a 970 G1 gaming and I couldn't be happier. The 3.5 vram thing has never been an issue running ARMA 3 maxed out @ 60 fps, Arkham Knight (even with the bad optimization and All Game works on), Total War: Rome 2 maxed, both the Metro Redux games nearly maxed, and even older badly optimized games runs great.

As for coil whine it isn't as widespread as you think. I researched graphics cards like crazy and didn't see it as common just possible for some cards. I only had coil whine one time in the FIFA 15 main menu. I've gone back since into the game and haven't heard it again or from any other game or application. It's possible that it is seem as common because people are more likely to post bad things than good things. I certainly haven't been raving on the Internet about the lack of coil whine on my card !

The power usage yeah isn't much but it made some difference. The biggest difference for was heat output and cooling capability. Until AMD is able to make their cards run cooler I'm gonna stick with Nvidia. I have a pretty good case for airflow but that's just one less thing I have to worry about cooling. The Windforce Cooler looks great and isn't as heavy or bulky as the AMD 3rd party coolers. I really do hope AMD does improve heat output because those Sapphire Vapor X coolers are sexy!

As for Jay's video...I was disappointed to see him use an EVGA SSC. An MSI Gaming 970 or G1 gaming would have been a better choice considering the EVGA card doesn't overclock that well. I've seen other benchmarking with that EVGA card and it really makes me think these benchmarks are screwed in the 390s favor. I'll give it credit though. It trades blows back and forth with the 970 at 1080p and beats it out of the ballpark at 1440p and above.

Running on Windows 10

While I agree it's a good card I think th 8 Gigs of VRAM will work better in future titles which will probably go above 4 Gigs. As for temps, Idk, I'm pretty happy my 200W TDP card running at 68*C. That is honestly cool considering it's made to run at 77*C - 80*C. It does, however dissipate the heat inside the case which can be an issue, I agree. As for coil whine, I've simply been hearing a lot about how it's common for the 970 to have it recently. At the end of the day, both are solid choices and both will do what they are meant to do.

Yeah they definitel both great choices. For me I'm fine with less vram because this is my first build and I'll probably be stepping up to a 980 or 980 ti equivalent in about 2 years anyways when I step up to 1440p or 4K.

I think the Asus Strix is one of the quieter ones but the Gigabye G1 runs coolest. No data on hand to back up that claim so going off from memory recall (posting from my phone).

I personally have the EVGA SSC 2.0s with the non-poop heat sinks. Was on sale for $314 when I bought mine.
