EMI Solution Help

Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

buy a cheap sound card

i got a xonar DG and that fixed all my EMI problems

I recently built my first PC, and begun my foray into the world of the glorious PC master race. However, since I bought it, everyone I called over Hangouts or Teamspeak or whatever complained about a constant whining whenever I booted up a game. After some research, I found that the source was EMI from my graphics card.

So, basically, what can I do to fix this? I need to still be able to talk to people through my PC, so I need both input and output through whatever I end up buying. Whatever I get needs great EMI shielding, or an easy DIY way to make it. Also I want to spend as little money as I can.

TL;DR - I need a way to get rid of my EMI, and still be able to talk (with my actual voice) to people online dirt cheap.

That ain't Falco.

Don't forget that soundcards could not solve the problem also because if the EMI is really bad than it could still be heard through the sound card. I'd suggest finding a cheap DAC because the sound is being processed out of the case away from EMI

But they're also rather expensive so you should try a soundcard first ;^)

Yeah, I'm just sorta worried that will make me $50 poorer and not solve any problems. If you know of a soundcard with killer EMI shielding, that'd do my job well enough.

But I haven't seen any DACs that also have input for a mic. That's the big issue; what I hear is not a huge deal, but everyone I talk to is basically screaming until I hang up.

You dont need EMI shielding unless youre trying to get a professional $200+ sound card for music production and extremely high quality audio

The fact that the sound card is not on the motherboard makes a huge difference

I could not hear absolutely any EMI from my xonar DG (except for front panel audio, but thats because it goes behind the motherboard)

USB soundcards could also be an option

Huh, I think I'll rush off and buy a $50 soundcard tomorrow morning.

Indeed, we'll see if they're be necessary.

Well, usually usb soundcards are much cheaper so if you see one tomorrow I suggest picking that up because your sound is going to be processed out of your pc just like how a DAC does it.

What's the difference between a USB soundcard and a DAC?

Nothing, really. A USB Soundcard has a DAC inside it.
