First Time Gaming Build (Surround)

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

PSU is overkill and overpriced. You'd be better off with an EVGA P2 1000W even though 850w will be fine.

Motherboard is overpriced. Something like an MSI gaming 5 is just as good for much less money.

Do you need 32GB of RAM? For games, 8GB is enough.

CPU is okay.

GPUs, even 2 980Tis are going to struggle with triple 1440p, and definitely won't be getting 144FPS with any decent settings.

Hey all,

This is my first time building a pc and wanted to make an ultimate surround setup, similar to the one linus did but with a few changes.

Power supply - Corsair AX-1200i

Motherboard - ASUS Maximus hero 7

RAM - Corsair 32gb Dominator Platinum

CPU - Intel Core I7 4790k

GPU - 2 way sli ASUS Strix 980ti

Cooler - NZXT Kraken X61

Case - NZXT H440 Red and Black

SSD - Samsung 850 EVO 500gb

SATA - Western Digital Black 4tb

I would like to run triple 27inch 1440p IPS panels and am looking at the Acer Predator XB270HU If I am able to run 3 of these bad boys. Otherwise maybe the Dell U2715H.

Interested in hearing everyones thoughts and opinions.

Cheers, Ethan.

Im going to paste here the exact same thing I just said on another thread;

Im currently running a triple monitor setup (3x24" IPS)... Im currently looking at curved  ultrawides for a replacement. As much as I love my three monitors they are a pain and a lot of games wont support it without some intense tweaking or just plain wont run on it. Ultrawides give you the best of both worlds IMHO. You get a wider view and get more screen real estate but its still only one monitor so games will have out of box support.

That and an ultrawide at  is easier 3440 x 1440p to drive than 5760 x 1080p.

Yeah, we're on the same threads

I would have to agree with this statement

Hey Eth,

The guys gave you some good advice. If you are just going to game on that build the memory is way too much. If yo are doing something else that can benefit from it - keep it. The PSU is also a major overkill in terms of wattage.
Regarding the storage, WD Black is a great performance-oriented drive with good speeds and can handle pretty much anything in pretty hostile environments (heat, vibrations, etc.). If you need the performance from your storage HDD (besides the SSD) I'd keep it. If you only need the HDD for secondary storage of your massive media and files and don't necessarily need faster access times, I'd drop the HDD to a WD Green drive as it works cooler, more quiet and saves energy. :) Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CBTXxZ

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
