Hi

I wanted to buy some parts to make a server that would host game servers for my friends and I, which is about six people. My budget is around 180-200 USD and I already have HDDs and a PSU. I was looking for suggestions on what to buy to get the most bang for my buck.
Any suggestions would be nice, tanks.  :)

What kind of servers are you running?

What kind of servers are you running?

this question is kinda key here because if you are running old and not optimized servers you should go intel but if you are running multiple core optimized servers go for fx6350 or fx8320 based server

Typically a "game" server needs processing power. It is handling the management, coordination, calculations, etc, for whatever game you are hosting. The client typically renders graphics and such. That being said, to run a decent server for even just 6 friends, you will need some decent, but not crushing power. Based on your budget though, I think you be very hard pressed to get something. You basically need the board, CPU and ram. Probably running Windows I assume, so there is that overhead... If you check say Newegg, they have various DIY kits... some include just what you need... based on your budget see what you can get and go from there...

The other thing to remember, to run a game server, you will need decent Internet service. And the killer, your upload needs to be pretty good, as you are sending all the data to clients. Your typically DSL 512kb upload may not cut it. Also, how's that firewall of yours? Unless you have decent one that doesn't introduce much latency, that could also bottleneck you.

Not trying to bring you down here, just trying to point out all the other factors you may not have thought about. :)

Thanks for the in-depth advice. When you say power, are we talking Xeon E3-1200 series kind of power or higher?

No, nothing that big... An older Sandy Bridge Core series CPU be enough if you only host one game server at a time... If you wanted to host multiple, with a bunch of concurrent clients.. then ya, that type of power...

Also, check used site maybe - here we have Ebay, kijiji, Craigslist - maybe find a deal on something out there someone is trying to get rid of...

Ah, I see. Well I won't be hosting servers all the time. However it would be nice to have a separate computer for handling the server, if you catch my drift. Thanks for the advice, will be looking into some higher performing parts.
