So I've heard Intel use crap Tim on their cpu chips, I have an i7 4790 and temps are ok but I was wondering what kind of temp drop would you see from deliding ? Can you change the tim to any like the artic silver 5? And once you delid can you put the lid back on ?.

From what I know, delidding isn't worth it on haswell refresh because the TIM isn't as bad as normal haswell.

It was the thermal interface material on the 4770k and 4770 that caused a stir, it's part of the reason why Intel did the Haswell refresh, they just updated the power delivery and tim and the 4790k and 4790 were born.

it still can make a big difference just ask @Lays , he did it to 2 cpus so far , and if yu have a chip like me with 3 cores 6c hotter then the other one ... lol

I know it CAN but I was saying it's less likely to make a huge difference.

My i7 4790 hits 50c on counter strike global offensive on the first two cores then the rest hit around 42, that's with a cyrorig r1 ultimate with a room temp of 19.5c, I think that's bad tbh.

For some reason today after an os reset my idle temps are spiking like crazy. They used to be mid 20s now they're in the 30s.

And once you delid can you put the lid back on ?.

Yes, that's the normal way to do it. Leaving the lid off would require a different mounting method for the cooler, because the chip isn't going to be quite as tall, and the exposed silicon won't be able to handle the same mounting pressures as the aluminum heatspreader.

Good to know thanks, could I use artic silver 5 on it ? And what's the best way to delid without a razor blade.
