Overclocking memory

DotoreN

I overclocked my msi gtx 970 (oc edition) with only +100 on both core and memory.

But I was wondering, most people tend not to overclock their memory, and only overclock their core (as you see more result from it).

What actually is the benefit of overclocking memory and how does it work with the 970 as it only has 3.5gb?

The 970 has 4GB of VRAM. Overclocking VRAM provides additional bandwidth between the GPU and the memory chips, which can increase frame rates, particularly when a game is very texture heavy and when gaming at higher resolutions like 2560x1600.

It mostly helps with AA and loading texture/objects onto memory. It does not improve thing drastically compared to OC your Core but it might be a few frames faster. I have +500 on my memory.

I have seen several cases where overclocking mem game more fps than overclocking the core

no idea why, but it happens

you should just test with trial and error, find what works best
