GTX 980 Bottleneck.

demetrij

I'm building myself a new pc & and I received a gtx 980 as a gift from my uncle. I haven't built it yet but I have all the parts so I was thinking about my gpu bottleneck. With my current build i'm aware it will be bottlenecked, but by how much? Would a gtx 970 be bottlenecked too? Thanks in advance, here's my build:

-AMD FX-8370E Black Edition CPU

-Gigabyte 970A-UD3P

-8GB (4gb x 2) HyperX Fury DDR3 1866mhz

-Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming

A 980 will not bottle neck with those parts. A 970 won't bottle neck either unless you are trying to game at 4k...

Why do you think a 980 will bottle neck?

That cpu heavily bottlenecks a 970 so your probably losing out on 10-50% of its capabilities depending on the game. And thats what i experienced with a 780 (970 is better), let alone a 980.

Use the 980 and get a better CPU like an i5 later on

EDIT: I will elaborate:

I had an 8350 @ 5.2ghz and a GTX 780 6GB

Titanfall 70fps

BF4 80fps

crysis 3 60fps

i5 4670k and the same 780 6GB

Titanfall 140fps

BF4 90-100fps

crysis 3 75-80fps

It will not be bottleknecked, it's an 8 core CPU which is running at 3.3GHz, it will not be bottleknecked. Bottlenecking is really rare and incredibly unlikely in most situations.

Why do you think a 980 will bottle neck?

Please do not post incorrect information. He has a HUGE bottleneck even at 1080p. Literally with an i5 he could get 30 OR MORE fps in most games (like i experienced but with a 780) at 1080p

His bottleneck is 10-50% at 1080p

This is incorrect on so many levels.

I misread the post. I thought he was afraid of the GPU bottle necking, not BEING bottle necked by the cpu.

Just because it's an eight core processor...doesn't mean those eight core is stronger then a quad core from Intel.

In fact some i3s can perform better than an 8350 at 4+ghz in BF4

Time to put FX in the family PC and add a GT 610... something it can handle.

It will bottleneck LESS the higher the resolution you go since games become more GPU bound.

At 4k, it will be almost identical to an Intel i5 CPU.

I'll be using an LG34UM95 which is a 3440x1440 monitor so It wont be that bad?

As i said, you will be loosing out on 10-50% of your fps.

My mobo uses an Am3+ socket so is there a cpu I could use with this mobo and not bottleneck my gpu?

No.

You need to switch to intel

at minimum i5 4460 and H97 motherboard. (about 330$ for both and the stock cooler will be enough even)

at maximum for only gaming i5 4690k and Z97 motherboard

Enjoy the 980 and go intel when u have the money

Why do you think a 980 will bottle neck?

Because FX CPUs are terrible.

It will not be bottleknecked, it's an 8 core CPU which is running at 3.3GHz, it will not be bottleknecked. Bottlenecking is really rare and incredibly unlikely in most situations.

That's not how it works. :'D

And one last thing, this might be a noob question but what's kind of the middle ground between the H97 and Z97?

H97 is meant for not overclocking so there nothing betweek, its either H97 or Z97

If u get an intel "k" cpu then u want Z97 if its an i5 4460 you only need H97 (usually about 60 bucks)

Yup check though, usually a 4690 sells for 215$ ish here

Otherwise good combo
