Nvidia or AMD?

Mr Fister

I would go for a 970 or 980, they have good price to performance, they're power efficient, good overclockers, support DX12 feature level 12_1 and have good driver support.

Its like people said you would not need more than 2gb vram for 1080p but recent games easily went over that. I myself come from a gtx 770 2gb card and it stutters like hell if you get over the 2gb. So all in all both are great cards and both trade blows in games.

970/980 has 4 and 6 gigs of ram, you dont need more that for a 1080 gaming unless you're modding in skyrim or downsampling 4k in shadow of mordor and gta, you dont need 8 Gb period, and even if future, by that time, you're gonna need a new gpu anyway.

980 OCs very good so no AMD is not better in that price range.

The R9 390x actually performs much better than the 290X ,so the gigabyte or the sapphire versions of R9 390X should be better than a 980,but the choice you make is highly dependent on the availability of said cards. The EVGA 980 is really great , but  the gigabyte windforce just wins it.

You dont need 980 nor 390, get 970 or 290x and save some money for next release. At 1080p they will max out every game (if the game is made well).

I'd agree

If he want to game at higher resolution at some point the 8gb could become usefull in the future. But i guess we will just have to wait and see how much vram new games in will use.

even if he's gonna play a game higher than 1440p, then 8 GB is still a waste unless he's playing in eyefinity, now dont come back saying that if he plans to buy 2 more monitor he may need it, because that's not what he is going for. because if that's the case, he might as well as buy a 980ti as it even beats fury by benchmarks.

My point was basically that we dont know how much vram future games will use. So it may be usefull to have 8gb.

ya your future of games needing 8 Gb ram is 5 more years away, and you need not worry about it now. because in 5 years, you're gonna need a new card at that time that can handle those games which uses 8 gb.

I'm really happy with the 970 at 1080p. You really don't need more at this point. (If you don't have a high refresh rate panel)

but we are talking about your needs are we?

as the op said, he's not planning on play above 1080p and 290x needs an higher PSU which also the OP is not willing to buy as of now,

plus he would be wasting money if he buys an R390 for a 1080p gaming.

also you missed the point completely,

if in future you need a game that NEEDS 8 gb ram, that card probably needs to be more powerful than what ever card that exist today, so making you current card with 8gb irrelevant.

im not gaming at 4k only 1080P. and the money i have to spend is for a 980 range of price. so in that price range what do you think?

If your only at 1080p then you should probably go with Nvidia, their high end cards (980, 980ti) tend to beat their AMD counterparts (290X/390X, Fury X) although at higher resolutions (1440p, 4k) the AMD cards tend to perform better.

how do you know that???

It is an educated guess, 5 years ago the flagship cards was the GTX 480/HD 5870 with 1.5GB/2GB respectively. Now do you really think if either of those cards had 4GB of VRAM would they perform much better? No of course not you would get a modern card with 4GB like a 290 or 970. So in 5 years when we have the R9 890X and GTX 1580 they will perform significantly better than a 290 with 8GB of RAM and it wouldn't be because of the extra RAM either.

my price range it at the 980 no more

Depending on where you live, the regular Fury should be the same price as the 980, since the prices on the 980 didn't drop everywhere

in 12 days, the R9 Fury Pro (non X) is coming out, it will be in the 550 USD range.

That card will most likely, even if it is cut down, match or mop the floor with the 980.

FURY, not FURY X

FuryX price is 650 USD

some places, 980 is still 500 USD

Fury, NON X, is supposed to launch at 550 USD

So it will be towards the higher end 980s in price

While i can understand that he doesnt have the money, now. He should still wait. Since this card is going to have custom PCBs, vendors like XFX and Sapphire should have cheaper entry level cards for sale.

I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you go with a 980. You can pick them up sub $500usd lately so their value is outstanding and they generally overclock insanely well with 4 full GB of VRAM and a fully unlocked gm204 chip
