Posted July 2, 2015 They can be the same thing. So Im not sure of your question. A NAS can use plex as it's media server utility as well. Or just build a box for one. Ususually a home made build can yield better results if you are doing a lot of remote clients at one time. But a NAS will work perfect if it's just at home for use. Posted July 2, 2015 I run synology software (XPenology) on my HP microserver and use that to run plex, subsonic and serviio. It's a pretty powerful solution and cheap too. I also point XBMC to my NAS media. Subsonic is a great music server. Plex is a great all rounder especially good for transcoding audio, if your client device doesn't support the standard. Serviio is great as a DNLA server for streaming natively to TVs etc. And XBMC is simply the best media centre client available.
 Posted July 2, 2015 Installing freenas now do you recommend installing it on a usb drive? Yes, absolutely. FreeNAS takes the entire physical medium it is installed on. You can't even partition it and use the rest for storage. Better to use an 8GB stick for it than a HDD or SSD.
