Friend upgrading CPU and MOBO

so my friend wants to upgrade his CPU and MOBO. he currently has an fx 6100 and some asus motherboard. he wants to know whats worth it. i put together 2 options. an i5 4690k and a 120 dollar mobo which ends up costing around 370 dollars, and another build with a 100 dollar motherboard and an i5 4460 which ends up costing around 290 dollars. he wants to know if its worth spending the extra 80 dollars. (he has an r9 290 with 16gb of ram)

Get slightly better CPU and cheap mobo, since the latter won't affect performance at all.

The extra $80 will go a long way when he needs some more horsepower later. Overclocking will reduce any bottlenecks he'd run into with that 4460 further down the road. I'd say it's worth it, but then again, I always say that overclocking is worth it. (You can put it on your resume when you're starting out)
