Right i bought my pc about a year or 2 ago with win 8.1 pre installed on it, the comp came with no disk or anything and i forgot how i got the product key to activate windows, is there any way to get my product key from the pc itself? thanks in advance

there should be a small sticker with the windows activation key on the pc

no i have the hdd still and no it was a custom built pc but the company i got it off has closed down so i have no way of getting in contact with them

Not anymore, Since Windows 8 onward you no longer get a COA sticker with a serial number on it. Keys from OEM's are now kept in the BIOS.

Getting the product key is quite simple so long as you have access to the Windows install. You can use software such as THIS to find your key to write it down.

To get your install media you only require the product key you lifted from your install and input it into M$ software here.

The Product Key on a computer that has Windows 8.1 pre-installed is embedded in the BIOS on the motherboard. There is no longer any sticker with the product key.

 

When you upgrade to the final version of the free Windows 8.1, the activation will be automatic and use the embedded product key.

With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has changed from stickers that have the product key that the user has to type in when installing the operating system to new BIOS embedded product keys. The idea is that by eliminating the sticker, you eliminate one of the easier ways for nefarious users to get a legitimate product key. Eliminating the product key sticker also removes any worry that the sticker might get damaged while at the same time eliminating the long and irritating process of typing in various letters and numbers when installing the operating system.

 

If the user has to reinstall the operating system on a machine that came with Windows 8.1, the installation process automatically grabs the software product key from the motherboard BIOS with no input from the user. This means that those familiar Windows product key stickers will no longer appear on the Windows 8.1 computers.
