I'm only running a fx 6300 and a 7870 but I really just want to do it as a project.  Would it be recommended I do a custom loop in a case as medium sized as a phantom 410? I'm not using the modular hdd cage as I only have 2 drives.  I'm only willing to spend around $200, I don't need the best performing pump, waterblock or rads and i have a shit ton of 120 fans I can use until I can get a decent set.  I do however want a nice looking reservoir.

I would not bother if you really want 'water cooling' then buy a H100i cause

1. $200 isnt enough

2. with that hardware its kind of pointless

PC: Corsair C70 Arctic, FX 9370, Corsair H80i, Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3, Corsair Vengence 16gb, Palit JetStream GTX 970, OCZ Vertex 4 128gb and Western Digital Blue 1Tb + 500gb, Antec Gamer 520w

Peripherals: Logitech G19 and SteelSeries Sensei RAW

Toshiba L50-A: i7 4700mq, 8gb, 1TB HDD, GT 740M 2gb

Im doing this becuase I'm most likely getting a 8series steamroller cpu or at least an 8350 once my friend takes my 6300 and psu. and getting a higher end hotter gpu probably, we'll see what the 9000 series is like.

They wont get so hot that you need to water cool, you can just put a H100i on the cpu and you would be fine!

the whole point of this is for it to be a project, I want a decent looking pc with a 240 rad on top and I could fit a 120mm in front and back, can I at least get a loop started for $200-$250?

Depending on your skills you could put a 240 in the top and mod a 240 in the front. It's actually not that hard. You'd have to put your HDDs in the 5.25" bays though or in the bottom near the PSU. I'll make a photo of mine and upload it for you.

thanks, I don't need to waterblock my gpu yet and if I go sli/cf in the future I'll probably run the cards with their own 120mm rads. Is it possible to get a 240mm rad, decent pump, reservoir, decent cpu waterblock, tubing, fittings and coolant for $200?

I cant just buy adapters 5.25 adapters for 3.5" drives so that should be a problem.

Do not buy kits. There are various reasons for this. I should start off by saying there is nothing bad with a kit. It will work properly and would will have a loop by the end of it. However, in kits the parts you get are typically low-end. I would never recommend a non-laing pump for a loop. Laing pumps are known for being quiet and reliable working for years without any issues. This is just an example. Kits tend to have lower quality everything. Secondly when buying a kit you will not be able to prioritise what you want in a loop. Maybe you are focusing on performance, maybe on looks? A kit will not give you this choice.

Most importantly a kit will not let you learn. Believe me when I say water cooling is a big investment, not only of money but also of time. If you feel that taking your time to look up components and make a parts list and doing research is something you would rather not do then you will be in for a shock later on. If you ever have a problem with your loop you will be much better placed after you have done your research and after selecting your own parts.

Therefore I advise you to go to the two stickys HERE and HERE and spend time reading about watercooling, then make a parts list and draw a diagram of what your loop is going to be, then ask us to review your parts and let you know what we think of the parts you have chosen.

Feel free to PM for any water-cooling questions. Check out my profile for more ways to contact me.

I read this, its pretty similar to the information as I have read on toms hardware also.  I only have a $200 budget to get a custom loop started I'm not going all out, kits seem like the way to go for under 200.  But I'll start taking a look around for individual parts. Thanks.

You know I looked around all day and did my research, this kit might be good for me, I'm just blocking my cpu and this is somewhat cheap, not too much more than a h100 and I can make It look decent I guess. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/image/16891/ex-wat-219_20.jpg/ex-wat-219/XSPC_Raystorm_750_RS240_Extreme_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_New_Rev_4_Pump_Included_w_Free_Dead-Water.html

It saves me money so I can get some proper peripherals.

It's a pretty decent pump, xspc has one a one year warranty on the pump.  After a year I may buy a new res/pump anyway.

Why not buy a pump with a much longer warranty instead of having to risk a pump failure for a year. Having your pump fail means your PC will be out of action until the new one comes and you have to re-set-up your old loop which takes a lot of time.

Please don't run dual loops with your budget, and you DO NOT NEED it.

Apparently you didn't read the things I said before, that'll be in well over a year for me, I'm not going to waterblock my 7870 I was thinking about doing this for nvidias 800 (sooner than expected) or amd's 9000 series.

A loop just for your gpu's? I don't think you need it even then, unless you have some crazy quad gpu loop...

I can wait 4-7 business days.  It's not like this pump fails in a week. I did my research on this kit and people have been happy with the purchase they made almost two years ago.

Just buy a Laing D5 and save yourself the trouble.
