Flawless SSD?

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

How about the degradation in performance issue I've heard about? True/false?

That was an 840 EVO thing. (but I don't even think all of them had it)

I would highly suggest 850 EVO SSD's.

I am about to replace my 250GB SSD (840 EVO) with a 120GB drive since I don't need it for any games except CS GO. I would like to know, which SSD is one of the most flawless? I have heard about issues with my current one, but not had any. I find the HyperX Savage really attractive, would fit perfect with my black/red build. The 250GB would be moved to my Laptop, which will be used for school, so don't worry about replacing a 250GB with a 120GB, I have already checked, I only use about 80GB on the desktop with my 250GB ssd.

So yea, which SSD is the best at the moment, in terms of reliability? Is there any SSD I should directly avoid, and is there any SSD I would definitely go for? Please don't mention the Intel SSDs, too pricey where I live.

Also, there is Weekend rush in 5 minutes where I live (in an internet store), so I am about as ready as I can be to pulling the trigger.

CPU: I7 4790K(4.6@1.252v)                               Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Windowed(Black)           Cooler: CM 212 EVO + NF F12 iPPC

RAM: HyperX Fury 1600MHZ CL10 2x4GB      Storage: Samsung 850 EVO(250GB) + WD Red(2TB)      PSU: Corsair RM750 (and no, it hasn't blown up!)

MoBo: Asus Maximus VII Ranger                      Graphics: MSI GTX 970 TwinFrozr (1494MHZ Core)       OS: Windows 10 Enterprise

850 EVO, Cheap and really really good

Intel SSDs are ridiculous. You can't even consider them consumer SSDs at that price. Those are enthusiast products

Flawless ssd's are Intels or Samsung 850 series but why would you downgrade it to less storage and not use your current one a bit pointless.

The laptop desperately needs an SSD, of course the 840 would be reused! :) It would be the only drive in the laptop, and soon education is going to be 6 months overseas, 6 months home, don't plan on brining 25KG of pure processing power :P

I hadn't heard anything about that but maybe do some googles about it lol

EDIT: looks like that's actually the 840 evos that have performance degradation problems, and it's a negligible performance loss

The most reliable SSDs are the ones from Intel. They actually test all the chips before putting them on their SSDs.

Seems like the 850 EVO is the way to go then ;)

Flawless SSD's?

Intel NVMe.

Flawless with a budget?

Samsung 850 EVO.

You knew what I meant, thanks :D

There was a firmware patch that fixed it about a month or two ago too. Reads on unused sectors (unused for months) would slow down over time but if you wrote to them again it would go back to full speed.

But yea 850 EVO is what I'd go for at the moment unless you want to spend a lot more.

There was a revision and newer EVO's don't have the problem,

There were multiple firmware updates that were suppose to fix it, but on some of them, the problem persisted.

In my house there are 2 840 EVO drives (brother and dad, both bought at the same point), but not sure if they both have the 'problem'

you can tell the difference between the newer and older by the casing, the newer ones are ( barely ) darker

Yea the last one seems to have done it, they properly identified the problem in detail this time instead of kinda maybeing it lol.

Ah?  I was only aware of the first "fix", which only really solved the slowdown issue on one of my three 840s.  Time to look up that new fix then.

EDIT : Googling only gives me links to October 2014 articles, which was the first fix.

You basically just need to run the new version of the performance restoration software (Edit: or in magician 4.6 apparently) to update the firmware (prevent slow downs in the future) and rewrite old sectors (restore old sectors speed): http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd840evo/overview.html (download at bottom of page)
