so im working on designing a budget pc for my friend to play csgo  at reasonable settings for as little as possible, he wants to try  and attempt to go pro, since all he does is play fps on console, anyways, based off the recommended spec from valve , i figure win 7 and 8gb ddr3, possibly a 960, but am unsure in terms of what processor, or if i should go amd, and would love some assistance, im also thinking atleast matx, since well need a wifi card. we are literally going from nothing for him so even items like monitor and peripheral recomendations would be good, and while their is no literal budget, were looking to go as cheap as possible.

i5 + processor + 8gb ram + 960 is well balanced, though I would recommend an R9 280x.

A rough budget would be nice.

rough would be less than 800 for everything  including peripherals os monitor speakers, literally everything.

CPU: the 4460 is a great cpu for this price range. Stock cooler used since you can't OC although a 4690k is neccessary if you are gonna overclock.
RAM: Same kit i use, just be sure to enable dual channel.
MOBO: should be good.
GPU: GTX 960 will be a great component for this system.
Storage: SSD will hold Windows, applications, and steam ofc and everything else on the hdd.
Case: idk if your friend wants to stare at his parts all day so this case will do although there is a windowed edition.
PSU: basically same PSU i use (i although have the 650 watt edition)
Peripheral reccomendations: Monitor should be 144hz if he's gonna try to go pro (like me :P). Mouse has to be a good one (i recommend Steelseries rival or Razer Deathadder with the Steelseries QCK Mousemat). Keyboard does not need to be anything special but it must be wired. Headset with a modmic is reccomended.
Final notes: i did not include any wifi cards since you would be dumb to try and play csgo over wifi. Stick with ethernet.

This is the best you are gonna get for around 800 with peripherals. and i did not include a headset since i can't find one. my reccomendation is to find a cheap headset with modmic and then save up for something like a hyperx cloud 2

Is he only going to be playing CSGO? If so, an APU would do fine with a few settings turned down. My G3258 + 750 Ti can handle the game no problem max settings (well, some AA turned off) and get well over 100 fps.

Could get a CPU cooler to overclock.

It's a bit over budget because I decided to include the HyperX Cloud in it. Why not speakers? Well, he's going to play CS:GO, and playing with a proper headset will definitely be much better than playing with speakers. Why HyperX Cloud? Well, it is probably the best gaming headset worth buying for under $90 right now, and it will definitely last for a long time.

A few other things I want to mention:

-i5 4460, it's haswell, it's cheap, it's fast, nothing fancy, no need to overclock, actually more than enough for CS:GO (i3 or perhaps even the pentium G is actually enough, but I think having 4 cores might come in handy for rendering gameplay videos or streaming if he chooses to)

-4 GB of RAM, enough for now, but might wanna add another stick later, hence I chose only 1 stick of 4GB DDR3.

-MSI GTX 960 Gaming 100ME, despite the color green, it's a great card with great aftermarket cooler from MSI for overclocking, plus a backplate. Why not R9 280/280X/285/380? Because of shadowplay, but should you wish to get the R9 280/280X/285/380 instead for any reason, go ahead they are also great and actually performs better than the GTX 960 in terms of raw fps.

-Why 1TB of HDD, why not SSD? Well, which one do you care the most, speed or storage capacity? The max I could squeeze into the budget is probably a 120GB SSD, so.. yeah.. you get the idea. The amount of headache from having fairly slower startup is not comparable to the amount of headache from having only 60-80 GB of spare disk capacity. Unless you have a spare HDD laying around, go ahead.

-The Microsoft keyboard + mouse is good enough for CS:GO. Having gaming keyboard / mouse would probably give him a little to no benefit from a 'standard business' keyboard/mouse. Having a gaming headset however, a whole different story, hence the HyperX Cloud.

-No wifi adapter? For gaming, I strongly recommend going wired rather than wireless because he's gonna need a stable internet connection all the time. However if wireless is the only option then perhaps I can recommend this wifi adapter Asus PCE-N10, I don't know much about wifi adapters because I never buy one for my PC, but that particular wifi adapter is cheap (only $9), but has good rating, so it must be good (it's Asus).

-Monitor, it's nothing fancy, it's good enough for CS:GO (well for any purpose really), but he might wanna save a fair amount of money for a 120Hz or 144Hz or perhaps G-Sync monitor later in the future especially if he is serious about going pro in CS:GO.

-Other parts, I chose mainly because of the 'bang for the buck' reason.

I forgot to mention something about the HyperX Cloud. It's actually Takstar Pro 80 headphones with attached mic. So you can choose either getting just the HyperX Cloud, or the Takstar Pro 80 with separate mic (I recommend Antlion Modmic). They're both basically the same thing. I'd probably go for the Pro 80 + Antlion Modmic because of upgrade-ability. I mean, it's headphones + mic, so if the headphones aren't good enough, just get better pair of headphones and reattach the mic.

that mouse is terrible for csgo. you need a proper mouse like the rival or deathadder. trust me it will be worth it. and 144hz instead of 60hz.

EDIT: DONT BUY RETAIL OS FFS!!!!! goto /r/microsoftsoftwareswap and get a key for around $25

Ideally to "go pro" he's going to want a 144Hz monitor and higher quality peripherals. That's like half of his budget gone at that point.

In terms of System specs I play CSGO on:

  • G3258 @4.5GHz
  • R9 280 @1100MHz
  • 8GB RAM @1866MHz

I play on low settings @ 1080p for improved visibility (can easily run high though) and achieve 250FPS constantly. Although my monitor is 60Hz.

So something like that would do the trick.

I tried, probably can change things out for more optimized build. CSGO is piss easy to run, dont need a 960 unless you play some higher end titles.

that mouse is terrible for csgo. you need a proper mouse like the rival or deathadder. trust me it will be worth it. and 144hz instead of 60hz.

EDIT: DONT BUY RETAIL OS FFS!!!!! goto /r/microsoftsoftwareswap and get a key for around $25

You might as well just pirate Windows for free then.

so im working on designing a budget pc for my friend to play csgo  at reasonable settings for as little as possible, he wants to try  and attempt to go pro, since all he does is play fps on console, anyways, based off the recommended spec from valve , i figure win 7 and 8gb ddr3, possibly a 960, but am unsure in terms of what processor, or if i should go amd, and would love some assistance, im also thinking atleast matx, since well need a wifi card. we are literally going from nothing for him so even items like monitor and peripheral recomendations would be good, and while their is no literal budget, were looking to go as cheap as possible.

I recommend searching your local Craigslist or similar site. Buying all that brand new for $800... You can find something better on Craigslist for the same price.

Even if you have to buy some parts here and some parts there.

Having to get all peripherals with the build is what is costing you money, and if you buy from craigslist most likely windows will already be on the system with a wipe.

Actually for CS GO if you play competitive you have to play on resolution something like 1024x768 and stretch it to 16:9 so you don't need great computer, get a good mouse, cheap keyboard, APU build, decent headset and decent monitor.

you don't have to play csgo at 4:3 streched just to be good. i run native 16:9 and i have no issues. i would tradeoff greater fov for smaller players. (don't judge me, im LE)
