if i get a USB to VGA adapter will that VGA be an extended screen or will it be a duplicate display of the main display?

The real question is; will that even work?

What are you trying to achieve, that you need USB to VGA?

understood; but what GPU (or motherboard) do you have? Why can't you hook it up to either one of those?

i have a compaq presario cq62 laptop. i am already using the VGA on there for a screen i already have. im just asking if i were to get a USB to VGA will it work?

For just web pages and such yes. Keep in mind its hard on your cpu depending on whats going on the display

yes there are usb to vga/dvi adapters and you can use them to both duplicate and extend the desktop. although they won't work well with video's (some usb3 ones will, not sure which ones though) but for webpages/office work it will suffice

Using 2 ports to hook up a display like that will not work, i suggest use a 3 way adapter for your 1 vga input.
