Mechanical Keyboard

Go to solution Solved by SillyWabbit,

Personally own the K95 (non-RGB) and Das 4, also got a Razer 2014 ultimate (non-RGB) in the household that I use here and there.

The Corsair and Razer I'd say are perfectly fine, depending on what you want and how far down this mechanical keyboard rabbit hole you have gotten yourself into. Say if you just gotten into the mechanical keyboard scene and are interested in the bells and whistles of the keyboard, Corsair and Razer are good entry ones. The quality is a big step up compared to membrane switches, and they got everything for you to play with so you can decide what you value in your future purchase. Regarding which is better than which, that's a personal thing, depends on what you make of the information available out there. But I say why no go with the Corsair and try the genuine tried and true cherry switches first and go from there, that is if you are deciding between these two.

The Das 4 is great, but only if you know what you really want otherwise it's fairly steep in price compared to the other boards. Especially when you compare the features.. which there is basically none. Aside from N key rollover, 2 USB ports and (very nice) media keys, there is nothing else. No lights, no programmability no nothing. The build quality is great, in terms of typing experience I rate it higher than Corsair and Razer. But it's base is rather light so it's not as sturdy compared to the other two boards. Not that it flex or anything, it doesn't, but it's not as heavy (claims to be the thinnest mechanical keyboard available on market) so it doesn't feel as chunky.  I have the Das at work and it in no way replaces the Corsair when it comes to gaming, they are very different really. At the end of the day, to me I'd say the corsair makes you look cool but the Das earns respect, kind of feeling.

If you want something solidly built and mainly for productivity with a hint of gaming here and there, you'll like the Das 4 I'm sure. But if you use it for a more general purpose you can consider K95 or Razer, imo though the K series are not as solidly built as some claims them to be. I wouldn't say there is a clear best, more of a question of your preference.

No opinions on the other boards, no experience with them.

Hei,

I am looking for a mechanical keyboard with silent keycaps, so i think i should choose mx brown or mx red.

As a keyboard, i saw them only in photos, so i dont know how they feel, but i want something with a good build quality, so no cheap plastic.

I dont care that much about lightning, i like more a tkl keyboard, but a normal one is also ok. I like very much that keyboard wich Linus use in his video, with some aftermarket colors.

So what i need is a silent, good quality keyboard and if can have a scroll wheel for volume is more better ... and a palm rest.

From what i checked, those are good keyboards:

Corsair K70 RGB

Razer Blackwidow Chroma (khali switches, i know)

Das 4 Keyboard Professional

Cooler Master NovaTouch TKL

Cooler Master Quickfire Rapid/-I

Asus Strix Pro

Mad Catz series

Can you guys tell me wich has more of what i want ? You can also recommend something else, but Ducky Shine is not available here.

Thank you,

Browns are not silent at all, and are in fact pretty loud,

Matias make one called a quiet pro that uses much quieter switches

Take it from someone who spent $200 on an RGB mechanical keyboard, it's not that great. It's good, better than membrane, but it's nothing truly amazing.

I suggest going to a local computer shop that sells mechanical keyboards, and see which switch you like the most. As for specific keyboards, anything under $125 that uses Cherry switches is going to be fine.

I wanted, but there is not any local shop with mechanical keyboards where i am, so thats why i asked you.

@ShadowCaptain then, the most silent mx cherry switches.

blacks maybe? they are harder to bottom out so are pretty quiet, i use browns with o-rings which are relatively quiet, but are definately still loud enough to annoy people through my headset

mechanical keyboard as quiet aa membrane is not gonna happen, but the sound is different, on membrane the sound is from bottoming out while mechanical it is from the switch it self (blue and brown, but some from the red) so that sound from the switch itself + bottoming out = more sound then membrane

The browns aren't that silent, to me at least.

Expect all mech keyboards to sound loud compared to membrane, but the feel of the switch is more beneficial than losing sound by decreasing performance.

Mech keyboards will help you type faster and even help in gaming (again in my preference)

So in the end it's based on what you like.

My recommendations (all based on my opinion) :

K70 RGB - Overall package for a steep price

CM Quickfire - Price for Performance

DAS or Ducky - Quality

Skip the rgb on the k70 and the price becomes extremely competitive for the full size. And then you also don't need software which is really helpful for using the keyboard on different os setups.

Finally red switches themselves are basically silent, if you don't bottom them out or put nice orings on them they will be by far the most silent cherry switches out there (but they will still likely be louder than most membrane keyboards.)

Ok, so far i am ready to buy a red or brown and add some o-rings on it, fair by me. Thank you guys for helping with the type of cherry mx switch, but

only @DatSpeed talked about a keyboard recommandation, any others ?

I really need a little more help.

Now, k70 has 1 and 1/2 votes.

Anyone else who want to share the own mechanical keyboard experience with me :) ?

Thank you,
