New PC vs upgrade old

Go to solution Solved by IanDrexP,

Hey guys

I have an HP PC at home running Windows 7. It's specs are not that great (athlon x4 640, 4gb ram, 1t HDD, 300ww PSU from whoknowswhere...) I was wondering if I got a 260x,270, 750ti or something like that, a new PSU and another 4gb stick of ram if I would get decent frame rates on high -ultra on games like dirt showdown or war thunder, or should I just she'll out the money and get a second PC. I would prefer the upgrades but I wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks

For the games you mentioned, adding a 750 Ti that has no additional power required other than the one provided by the PCI-E slot then you are GOLDEN! Even without the ram upgrade or PSU upgrade it says that you will fit the recommended system requirements of the games you mentioned.

I think a whole new is the best if you want to play games on high-ultra settings. I think the CPU might be a bit to old for it to be worth to only do a RAM and GPU upgrade.

You could upgrade to a 750ti, another 4gb of ram, and a 1tb hdd and new psu. I would maybe recommend something greater than a 300w psu.

My Main PC:

I would sell it and start over most of HP's PC run proprietary hardware that only works with there systems so adding a different PSU may not work in your system. Your much better off building a custom system and adding on to it over time then adding good hardware to an HP.

It's too old to touch. Save the hard drive and RAM and rebuild fresh.

really? Nividea's specs list a bare minimum power recomendation of 300W, right on the money. Do you want to run a HP provided power supply at max for the time you spend playing any game? I think I'd prefer to do brain surgery with the power pack for an operation game.

i like the 750 ti idea.

You can get a cheap Corsair 430W PSU if you want peace of mind and sure compatibility.

As ian drex listed, a cheap aftermarket power supply would be advised. While an old 300W power supply "might" be enough for idle operation, I wouldn't trust it with a heavy gaming load. When you run up against the limit of your power supply, you don't get the blue screen of death, your computer just switches off.
