For my gaming sytem I  have been using a ASUS Xonar D2X sound card with some old 7.1 speakers and a set of sennheiser 558's wich sounds great altho i just got given a really nice sourround system as a wedding present (for the lounge room) and now the 5.1 Yamaha htr-3066 reciver and set of nice 5.1 speakers that i had before is gathering dust, my question is would there be any benifit in sound using my old 5.1 setup for my gaming pc or is my currnet sound card / speaker setup better than that of this reciver? asuming that if i was to use the reciver the sound card would be doing almost nothing other than Encoding over SPDF as my board only supports 2.1 over SPDF?

Thanks for any help.

I assume that the reciver would be better, due to how much it costs lol.

How is a sound card driving speakers in the first place?

If they're active speakers, I imagine there's not much of a difference between the two sources.
