AM3 Socket Processor In AM2 Socket ?

Hello!

Is it possible to use AM3 Socket type processor in AM2 socket ?
And if it is possible do i have to upgrade my ram to ddr3 aswell ?

PC SPECS ATM:

RAM: DDR2 6gb
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+

MOTHERBOARD: ECS GF8100VM-M5

I think you can put AM3 in AM2+ and AM3+ but never in a AM2!

 

And even if it fits and all you need to check the motherboards list of supported CPUs!!!

It actually depends, a lot of AM2 board had BIOS updates that supported AM2+ and also AM3 CPUs, the downside being you ran at HT1.0 instead of HT2.0/3.0 (AM2+/AM3).

 

It is worth checking your motherboards support list, it may not support 125/140W CPUs.

And to the guys replying no, in future please just check first if you don't actually know the answer and are just answering based on the logical assumption that the sockets are different like Intel.

 

Please note you will have to use DDR2; AM3 introduced DDR3. But Athlon/Phenom II CPUs have a DDR2 memory controller as well so you're sorted.

 

Also update your BIOS before performing any upgrade.

Your mb isn't an AM3 mb, It's one of those AM2+ motherboards that supports some AM3 CPUs (phenoms II X, etc)

 

 

Also you can't run DDR3, that motherboard only supports DDR2

Ya, no ddr3, but they can use an AM3 not an AM3+, with a bios update from the links I gave them from the maker.

It's certainly an upgrade

 

I'd look for X4s though, they shouldn't be much more. Preferably a Athlon II 640 which is a 95W part I believe.

Yes, it is possible to put the AM3 CPU into an AM2 socket, and no it is not possible to upgrade your RAM to DDR3. The slots are physically incompatible with DDR3 RAM.
