AMD vs NVIDIA

Hi!

 

So AMD 300 Series has been released now are available to buy and I need new GPU. Budget is 500pounds. Currently I have 1080p monitor, but will be upgrading to 4k at the end of the year. So my options are as follows :

 

1.r9 390 - 270pounds

2.r9 390x - 350pounds

3. reference 970 - 300pounds

4. reference 980 - 420pounds

 

I haven't included 980ti and 295x2 in my list because they are over my budget right now. 200 series in my country are hard to find and prices are not too different from 300 series.

 

Also I'm considering SLI or Xfire next year, but I'm not sure if my PSU would be powerful enough for AMD options, as it is ax760. Aside from the raw performance, Im looking for silence operation on idle and under full load.

Go with 970 or 980...

Since you are going to upgrade to a 4k monitor get the r9 390x. At 1080p it will perform the same as the 970 but at higher resolutions it will perform as fast as the 980 and faster in some cases.

970 is not a 4k card, the 8gigs of ram of the 390x will help you

Considering an aftermarket 970 costs about the same as an aftermarket 390x i'd say go with the 390x considerably more powerful in higher resolutions , more VRAM and memory bus.

I want a 390! But I has the 970...

 

Well even if I got the 390 the drivers may not be so good!

*Linux drivers are awful why AMD why?!

*OpenGL support is terrible to the point many game options most be shut off...

The thing I don't like abut amd 300 series is power consumption. Im not going to replace my ax760 just to power 2 amazingly power hungry gpus. Other thing about 390x is that it uses 3 pcie slots, would that be a problem with maximus gene vii motherboard?
