Just watching a YouTube video of a PC build guide, and the man has rested the CPU on the motherboard box. Is that safe/ok? Look at 45:06 on this video:

Its safe, just don't put it on the outside of the anti static bag.

Matter of fact it is recommend for doing a test of your mobo, even Linus suggests it, before installing in your case.

ye i know that lol. so you can put the cpu on the table/box whatever but you can't touch the bottom with your finger? How does that make any sense?

Because it's the contacts at the bottom that are conductive. Basically if you have any static charge on you, you have a good chance of killing the CPU if you touch the contacts.

Sig under construction.

Oh, hadn't thought about oils. If you get oils on it you can probably carefully use some rubbing alcohol and make sure it's completely evaporated before going anywhere further if that's a concern.

so final question is: you can place the cpu on wooden surface, mobo box and won't affect it/ have to clean the bottom, but if u touch with ur finger u have to clean it?

Best to avoid placing it on anything that might transfer any contaminants to the surface - be it oils, water, whatever.  The danger of foreign substances is that they can cause oxidation than might adversely affect function.  Any clean, hard, static free surface is ok, but not placing it anywhere other than in the socket is ideal.
