mATX Question

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

I'm planning my first build and was wondering if there is any negative to mATX motherboards other than RAM and expansion slots.

Depends which platform.

If AM3+, then yea, you are going to have some problems being stable unless using an FX4.

If LGA1150, then no problems.

I would say the main issue for most with mATX is the few number of motherboard fan headers.  You can fix this with Y splitters, or Fan Controllers.

CPU: i5 6600k OCed to 4.5Ghz @ 1.35v, GPU: R9 390 Nitro, Motherboard: Asus z170-A, CPU Cooler: H100i GTX, RAM: HyperX 2x8 16gb DDR4, PSU: Seasonic x650, Storage: 850 EVO 500gb, WD 1tb blue, Case: H440 White/Black

Been using mATX for my last two builds & love it. I run dual monitors so I can't use SLI/XFire so I don't need the extra PCIe slots for GPUs. Both boards have had 4 RAM slots & capped at 32GB of supported memory.

First board had 3 fan headers; current one has 4 - all PWM. M.2 is also available on many of them, making a great place for your OS drive.

Honestly, anymore I see no reason for a full ATX board unless you need 3+ GPUs (most mATX can do 2x) or you need 6+ SATA devices.
