Minecraft Server PC

Tjomme

Me and 3 other friends are building a Minecraft Server PC to run a Minecraft server on and we're all paying 200 dollars (so 800 total) and we don't know so much about it.

Questions:

What's the best value (Ex: is a 800 dollar much better than a 600 dollar machine)

What's the best CPU in our price rang?

Do we just need to install windows?

Do we just open the Minecraft_server.jar file and we're ready to go?

How much ram do we need?

Does it need a GPU?

Does it need a CPU cooler?

Thanks :D

Probably what's going to be it!

with that budget grab a 256gb SSD, and at least 32GB of RAM. Yes, just a copy of Windows 8.1 would do you wonders. I'd go for a low power CPU.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

A. No GPU is needed

B. No need for WIndows, you can use Linux

C. An LGA 1150 xeon based CPU will do just fine

D. Get a CPU cooler if it is necessary

E. 16GB of Ram is fine

F. High Quality PSU since its going to be a server running 24/7

This is from personal experience as I have a server right next to me running 24/7

First let me start with I am very experienced in this topic. I own and run a 100+ player server with over $5000 in donations.

What's the best value (Ex: is a 800 dollar much better than a 600 dollar machine)

$800

What's the best CPU in our price rang?

Minecraft favors single thread performance, so the i7-4790k will be the BEST possible processor. Not even a Xeon 2699 V3 will be better for a Minecraft server.

Do we just need to install windows?

Windows is fine. If you are more experienced with computers a distribution of Linux will benefit you.

Do we just open the Minecraft_server.jar file and we're ready to go?

Yes. Besides all the plugins and if you want to configure any DDoS protection.

How much ram do we need?

8GB is the sweet spot.

Does it need a GPU?

No. Unless your CPU does not have integrated graphics.

Does it need a CPU cooler?

No. If you want to overclock to get more performance out of your CPU, yes.

Why do you both suggest 32GB of RAM when 16GB or 8GB is more then enough.

I personally have a dedicated MC server with 166 mods and the server most of the time uses around 4GB

Is that your download or upload? As long as your upload is a constant say 20mbps you should be fine for a small server.

The 250GB ssd and the z97 motherboard AREN'T necessary but it is nice to have.

The CPU is fine as my own 3770 isn't being fully utilized anyways.

Yeah it was already under budget so I just put it in there. I picked a CPU that was hyperthreaded and came with a iGPU.

Yes, but the full server tick runs on one thread which is the most important part. Bukkit isn't as optimized as you think. They have limitations.

Are you sure? Minecraft servers don't use as much ram as you think.
