Well the R9 380 is a R9 285, those are good for 1080p, especially since you can get the 2 or 4gb variants for cheaper than the 960's

Otherwise a R9 370 wich is cheaper

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

Are there going to be anything from AMD that will be a sweet spot for 1080p 40-60fps gaming? Or should I just buy r9 280x or r9 290

280x is enough for 99% of games at 1080p 60fp, so hopefully the newer models with DX12 and new drivers should get even better performance

280x will do that in most if not all games but if you can spend a little more then why not get a newer card even if it is a rebrand with some minor new things. The newer cards are supposed to have less heat and power consumption.

MSI R9 380 (it's a 380 with 4GB VRAM) seems to be pretty good.

But you can of course still go for a 290.

I have an R9 290, this seems like a safe bet for future-proof 1080p gaming. I max most games I play, but don't play a ton of new games. I am running Witcher 3 on high, and had to fiddle with Crysis 3 a bit. Crysis 3 maxed put me in the mid 40s IIRC. If you care less about maxing things then maybe there is an argument for the 280X, but as cheap as 290s are now, I wouldn't try to save that little money. I think most 300 series are rebrands anyway, unless you are shelling out the $550 for a Fury (overkill for 1080p), then might as well just get a card now if the deal is right. I can recommend the PCS+ R9 290, although the Vapor-X should probably top your list if you can find it at a reasonable price.

EDIT: I need to research DX-12 compatibility still, so that may be the selling point you are looking for.

Wouldn't you rather have full DX12 support though?

Did you not see the whole part of me saying if you can spend a little more to get a newer card with some minor new features? DX12 is in the minor new features.
