so i'm looking for some headphones for gaming-music-movies and all that, and previously, ive come to the HD 518 vs ATH-M40X. then i've decided "yeah, i think that i need some closed type headphones"

so i came up to the ATH-M40X. well.... people say that they're great for music and all, but are they good for gaming? is the soundstage at least "medium" ? (i know that the sound stage cant be that huge because they're closed type)

or are there any better options for the price?

thanks :D

ps. sorry for my bad english - as english isn't my 1st language.

I actually own the ATH-M40X's, but I don't have much point of reference so it's hard for me to say if they're really "ideal." They sound great to my ears in games or music (though I still prefer my speakers for music where possible).

is the positioning and soundstaging good?

I think something like the Takstar Hi 2050 would work really well for you. The price is fairly low and they're basically an open version of the HyperX Cloud headset, which are already pretty good sounding for games as it stands. The soundstage is going to be much better than on the M40x. However, if you can get the 518s cheaper in your area they might be the better option.

I wouldn't game with an M40X or even an M50x simply because after having an AKG K701... that headphone's ridiculously awesome for gaming. Sometimes I'd dare say its more tuned to competitive gaming than the Sennheiser HD800. Weird that those two audiophile or professional studio headphones are pretty much designed for audiophiles, audio-engineers, basically enthusiasts and professionals who want the most accurate audio possible (for their respective price tags) are really good for gaming... atleast in my opinion. But yeah, best to ask others about it since I do get a lot of flack for calling the K701 perfect for gaming (in another forum), but yeah...

If you have 30 minutes of spare time, you can watch this.

It should give you the idea of a good headphone for gaming as well as some product recommendation.

Also, I forgot to mention, I have the M50. Both the M40(X) and M50(X) are identical in terms of soundstage, and I can confirm that although they can be used for gaming, I wouldn't necessarily recommend them.

I own them, and I think they're great for gaming. I play CSGO BF4 GTA and I really like them. They're quite neutral so no weird balance in high and low sounds.

  • 2 years later...

I game with my ATH-M50X and they are very good ( CS:GO ) , If your ears work good, then i think they are just perfect.

They are good when you go outside,( look good) , excelend headphones for music , very good for movies too and i have 0 problems with them in cs go or other games. Yes they may not be the best for gamin but i think they are the best for gamin-music-movies.
