Merge System Partitions

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

That's normal. It's supposed to do that. My setup is the same way on my SSD.

Hi everybody,

My friend helped me build my computer and it has a 120 GB solid state drive.  When he did disc management, it seems he placed my system files in two partitions. First primary partition has about 100MB reserved for system files, but another partition on that drive contains Boot, Page File, and Crash Dump. Is it possible to merge my 100MB system partition with the partition that contains the Boot, Page File, etc? That partitions contains the remaining 119 GB or so.

Thanks!

Oh, really? I guess I am not wrong then that they are all system files. Merging them or not is sort of arbitrary, but I kind of wanted to "clean it up." I also wanted to make a separate partition that could contain a single install of a high resource game say like a 50GB game. I don't actually think I have enough space for that. It seems I only have 17% left of the 2nd partition to work with..

You can create additional partitions if you so desire. You have to shrink your main partition though in order to create "unallocated space" which can then be formatted.

Yeah, that's the weird thing. I guess my system files take up almost the entire SSD, unless I have a bunch of photos in their or something that I forgot about. I think the amount it would let me shrink the partition was only about 10 GB or so to be used in another partition on that same drive

No, windows needs that partition for something.

In my experience, it uses it to boot. I once had that partition on my hard drive while the actual OS was on my SSD - I took the hard drive out, and Windows refused to boot. In fact, I had a black screen with the underscore "blinking."

And I guess that's the advantage of having those files on the SSD as well, increasing the boot speed or whatnot, if that's the case
