Definitely. 90C is fine too. Reference one goes over 90.

What is an acceptable load temperature for a 290x, 84C?

Seems like you have it overvolted and OCed quite alot....

actually my 290x arrives tomorrow, i am just wondering what temps would be sufficient before id have to RMA

Mine runs around 80c with an ambient on 33-35c xD

But 95c is the max

EDIT: Direct cu ii does give higher temps than other aibs...

yeah i know, it was just going so so so cheap, £210 for a 290x so i settled for that. What temps do u think i will get with the asus cooler @ load?

Depends on your ambient room temperature and what you set the fan profile to be...

I live in scotland so anywhere from 9C to 21C at the absolute hottest,

custom fan curve is a def, Not entirely sure what to do with undervolting a gpu, only ever OC'd etc on a CPU. Any tips as to what voltages to try?

Different chip different juice.  :lol:  Mine stable@1030/1250(Stock) but with -69mV.

I've had 22-24*c ambient overnights, and had 88-92*c with a 290x Windforce cooler :( (Just a really bad binned core, yet fully stable)

It got worse during the day with 25*c ambient... I HAD to put it under water.

 

Yet another Windforce 290 (Same PCB/Cooler, just less shaders (same voltage tho) I have has NEVER exceeded 78*c, and usually sticks around 72-75*c on most days/longer gaming times.

(My previous Windforce card the HD7950 OC'd to the BALLS 1260Mhz, was 66-70*c, yet had another HD7950 that only did 1150Mhz, @ 70*c or higher.)

 

So it can swing both ways by a fair margin depending on the core. IMO If its aftermarket it should never be hitting the 94*c, but yeah, some cards do get close.

We have 37C ambient and while oc'd on air, my lightning didnt pass 78...

You should be fine since your ambient temperature is pretty low unless the cooler is dud. My ambient temp is much hotter btw.

 

When i got my card, 1st thing i did was ran a few benchmarks, i checked the temperature after that and it was 82c max and i was like...

Because my previous card which is a 7950 Vapor-X barely reached 65c fully overclocked.

After undervolting and created a custom fan curve, the temp went down around -10c and went down few more degrees after i improved my casing air flow.

 

The R9-290/x DCU2 cooler need tonnes of airflow btw.
