Just out of curiosity... What board do you have?

 

EDIT: nvm, it's on your profile.

 

EDIT2: Well, it does support up to 16GB... Maybe take both sticks out, swap slots, and boot with one stick (then boot with both)?

I've tried :P

 

Each stick individually in each slot. Still reads only 3GB....

Have you run Memtest86+ on it to see if it can read all of it (or even some Linux-based OS)?

I really don't want to have to reinstall everything after fresh install of Windows.....

Is there a way I can avoid that? And what OS would you recommend?

You shouldn't have to install Linux to test. Just use the LiveCD or USB deal. I can't remember if they have a task manager on the LiveCD/USB deal or not though.

 

Depending on the speed of your internet connection, Ubuntu (faster) or Xubuntu (slower). Only reason I say based on your internet is so you can try to figure it out faster.

Haha I was literally about to post telling you to do this. Unfortunately Windows is a bit dumb and does this sometimes.

 

It also does this for CPU cores, from time to time if you install a new CPU with more cores than your previous Windows will not update.
