Cheap portable-ish lighting setup for Video?

Hi Guys,

So I like to make videos around the house, and i need a decent light (or lights) that will be ok for moving around a bit. just in the house.

It should blend with the lights in my house... so it needs to be warm.

I think they are CFL lights... i need one that will just plug in to a socket (Uk please) and then i can start recording, Battery powered is also ok. Also, not too bright that its eye blinding... because im gonna be putting it near people... if it has a dimmer, even better.... but it should be fairly bright.. also not too expensive because i need a few of them... Under £50ish? I would prefer like £20ish but £50 is the max...

We have lights like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Energy-Saving-Bayonet-Lifetime/dp/B001BYUIT2

Also, i will be shooting at 24fps 1/50th shutter speed, so it shouldnt flicker at that....

Thanks

Gershy13

Can someone who has a lens that will do f1.4,f1.8,f2.8,and f4, please give me a sample of DOF and Light?

mainly light, because i have the kit lens, which does f4 at 24mm, and its not very good... how much of light will f2.8 24mm (STM pancake) add?

and also the 50mm f1.8 (wondering if its worth it to get the f1.4)

Thanks

Here's the thing, a faster lens is not a substitute for lighting.

With lighting you can shape your scene and stop down your lenses so you have more DOF to keep in focus.

I've used work lamps (From local hardware shop) but they give off a lot of heat. If you don't plan to move it much the cheap lighting kits from ebay or amazon are pretty good just set them up once and never touch them again.

They're not heavy. You can port them around,

But you cannot dim CFLs (nor should you want to). You can great lighting without pointing light directly into people's faces, point them at walls or reflectors or whatever the situation calls for.

I dont necessarily want CFLs... I need the color temperature to be similar or the same as them...

Led ones will be nice... And they need to be small, like a floodlight or something.. So I can plug it in and move it around to how I like it...

I was looking at ebay led floodlights, but wondered if they flicker when recording, also I dont know the temperature of them...

And I have a small room, so I cant have big lights and stands everywhere...

So yeah...

Thanks

CFLs and LEDs will flicker (poor LEDs will flicker even at 30 FPS, while CFLs flicker only at higher frame rates). LEDs are a cooler colour temperature (and real temperature) and I don't like working with them. CFLs are closer to daylight, and I usually use them in a soft box. CFLs are my go to for every day shooting.

Tungsten lights have a warm color temperature (which to me is annoying, but easily fixable with the right white balance) and provide constant light. They throw off a lot of heat though, and you might not be able to run them constantly without overheating (mine can do about half an hour, though after 10 minutes I'm drowning in sweat).

A tip - if you are limited in space, just buy one light stand and a few different bulbs and replace the bulbs in your house lights and lamps to get the lighting how you like. I use a 125W CFL in the socket above my desk for great lighting (though it flickers if I have 3D glasses on).

Set the right white balance, and you should be golden. Maybe a slight correction or two in post.

im gonna be filming at 24fps.. so 1/50th or 1/48th shutter speed...

I have very limited space. In my room, i have just about enough space left to put a tripod up and sit comfortably in a chair... so not much... maybe a little room for a light stand or 2...

I have a very limited budget... and i kind of want the warm color temperature to go with all the other lights in our house... my CFLs are about 2700k? or around there...

I dont really want things that warm the room too much, especially in a small room like mine.

Actually, most of the time, i will be filming downstairs, in our dining room, where there is quite a bit more space... but im usually just filming stuff like this:

(Please wait for processing...) (Yes its not great, its my first time filming in low light and i was doing everything including focusing so its a bit off....) (i removed noise with Neat Video so it looks soft...)

So im in a tight space and just need that extra bit of light to get less noise.

Something for that... As i said, we are using CFL bulbs with a temperature of about 2700k, so it needs to match that..

Also be not so big as it would disturb those who i am filming... (my brother in this case...) just a smallish light that will be ok on a table, or a small stand..

Thanks
